that is pretty much it. they would also drill in to the main if needed, to get as close to the fire as possible, and plug the hole once the fire was put out. Hence, fire plug :D

Our area is mixed with some hydrants and some with out we use tankers for first strike, and have a tanker task force (11 trucks 2 fill pumpers) on second call for the areas with out any hydrents.

We also have a LDH (large diamater hose) task force can supply about 1000 gallons a minuet fro a mile ususlly from a draft and takes about 20 pumpers to functiin properly. that can bring the hydrant to you.
