I heard Australia is wonderful safe place to live, the police will protect you 23/6..........

You may not be aware of how the police are organised down here... Each individual State and the Northern Territory has their own Police Service.

Just the one. No separate County/Shire, Town, Metropolitan or State Bureau of Investigation. There is one Federal Police Service for international stuff, international airports and they police the ACT (Canberra).

This means standard training for the entire force through each State's Police Training facility/academy. This also means better communication and coordination amongst the Service.

I have a different take on the gun issue. Police in the US always assume that you are armed, threat to them and shoots first. Cases that policeman is prosecuted for killing somebody are rare. Guns make you a target. As I see it, in the place I live in, I am more likely to be shot by police than criminal.
If I have to live in fear and have guns to protect myself I would sell the house and move to a safe place.
I understand people want guns and have right to own them. I don't understand the need.

Most of us know that RIT is at best a socialist and probably a communist. He is a great example of why immigration should be strictly controlled.

If we wind up importing enough like RIT we will be the next Australia in respect to the 'right to keep and bear arms'.

Fire arms level the field in the "strong over the weak" situations. The frailest are on even terms with the massive when one on one. Numbers prevail in any case.

However. The second amendment is not about self defence from other citizens. It is one more "check and balance" to our democracy. No different than the legislative, judicial or executive branches.

Call it the ultimate voice of the people in times when the vote does not stop tyranny.

Oh That brings us back to "levelling the field" . I'm impressed that the Australian government has not usurped greater powers. Perhaps they have...

Am I correct that the guy with the knife didn't break into the house but was banging on the door? How dumb to go outside with an unloaded gun against a knife. Even with a loaded gun I would stay inside and call the cops. Someone with a knife outside isn't a serious threat until they break in. If they break in, then you're justified in using force to defend yourself. At least that's how I understand the law here. It may be different other places.

This item here was the first story printed in the paper, the day before the one I posted at the start of this thread.

Border resident pulls out rifle as invader forces way into house with knife | The Border Mail

The cops don't sound too concerned in this article - who knows what made them change their mind.

This article gives more details about the bloke breaking into another house earlier, so I assume he was doing the rounds of random semi-isolated houses. My guess is that the cops would have been at least 10 - 15 mins away from this house.

As someone else posted, maybe the owner should have reached for a hockey stick too?

That is utopia. It assumes that all the people would want to the same thing. In example get rid of government. But that is not the case. If US government loses control this country will look like Afghanistan in less than a week. All the possible faction would first fight each other and at the end we would end up with the most ruthless dictator in power. There won't be democracy.

Exactly right! You are most astute!

And is that OK with you? To be a sheep amidst the lions? "The tree of freedom needs to be fertilized by the blood of patriots from time to time"

You don't need to look to far to see governments trampling their citizens. Syria, Turkey, N.Korea, Venezuela, ...etc...etc... (Australia??? Hmmm)

Do you feel that some "regions" are immune? I would call you a dreamer. Heck, The American Founders, with apparent wisdom, recognized the inevitability of the possibility. They provided the checks and balances for such times.

Just remember, "when seconds count, the police are only minutes away".

CalG, what the heck are you on about.

You have your constitution as the binding principal of your country and your government. A document that is the foundation of your laws. It's, so far, a stable agreement amongst your citizens.

Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK (and quite a few other Commonwealth countries) are a Constitutional Monarchy with the 'Crown' as the binding principal of these countries, their governments and the foundation of our laws. There are checks & balances aplenty, which is evident in our stability.

We also don't feel a need to carry a handgun on our person every time we 'go into town'. You may find that concept foreign, even frightening, but nevertheless it's true over here.

Handguns can be purchased and used, for enjoyment, at a registered pistol club. Shotguns can be used for hunting. Rifles can be used for hunting. We like it that way.

Well, he could be headed to Australia, New Zealand or Canada... places where you don't feel like you can't live without being armed all the time.
Been to west, central, and eastern Canada and a fair number of cities and surrounding areas in Aussie Land. Not had a chance to visit NZ yet. Have to admit I ALWAYS enjoy my time in Australia, but I am on the company dime mostly until I go off the grid in Margaret River or Noosa Beach areas! Tis a beautiful country. Would not trade anywhere for the freedoms of the USA though.

You'll find in the states that there are many reasons for the need to carry a concealed weapon. Here's a recent news story as an example:

Florida Woman Stops Alligator Attack Using a Small Beretta

This is a story of self-control and marksmanship by a brave, cool-headed woman with a small pistol against a fierce predator. What's the smallest caliber that you would trust to protect yourself?

A Beretta Jetfire. Here's her story in her own words:

"While out walking along the edge of a pond just outside my house in The Villages with my soon to be ex-husband discussing property settlement and other divorce issues, we were surprised by a huge 12-ft. alligator which suddenly emerged from the murky water and began charging us with its large jaws wide open.

She must have been protecting her nest because she was extremely aggressive.
If I had not had my little Beretta Jetfire .25 caliber pistol with me, I would not be here today!"
"Just one quick shot to my estranged husband's knee cap was all it took

The 'gator got him easily and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace.
It's one of the best pistols in my collection, plus the amount I saved in lawyer's fees was really incredible.
His life insurance was a big bonus too!
