You'll find in the states that there are many reasons for the need to carry a concealed weapon. Here's a recent news story as an example: Florida Woman Stops Alligator Attack Using a Small Beretta This is a story of self-control and marksmanship by a brave, cool-headed woman with a small pistol against a fierce predator. What's the smallest caliber that you would trust to protect yourself? A Beretta Jetfire. Here's her story in her own words: "While out walking along the edge of a pond just outside my house in The Villages with my soon to be ex-husband discussing property settlement and other divorce issues, we were surprised by a huge 12-ft. alligator which suddenly emerged from the murky water and began charging us with its large jaws wide open. She must have been protecting her nest because she was extremely aggressive. If I had not had my little Beretta Jetfire .25 caliber pistol with me, I would not be here today!" "Just one quick shot to my estranged husband's knee cap was all it took The 'gator got him easily and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace. It's one of the best pistols in my collection, plus the amount I saved in lawyer's fees was really incredible. His life insurance was a big bonus too!
CalG, what the heck are you on about.
You have your constitution as the binding principal of your country and your government. A document that is the foundation of your laws. It's, so far, a stable agreement amongst your citizens.
Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK (and quite a few other Commonwealth countries) are a Constitutional Monarchy with the 'Crown' as the binding principal of these countries, their governments and the foundation of our laws. There are checks & balances aplenty, which is evident in our stability.
We also don't feel a need to carry a handgun on our person every time we 'go into town'. You may find that concept foreign, even frightening, but nevertheless it's true over here.
Handguns can be purchased and used, for enjoyment, at a registered pistol club. Shotguns can be used for hunting. Rifles can be used for hunting. We like it that way.

If you do not see the tyranny of the "government confiscation of the firearm" as an encroachment on law abiding members of society.
We do not share a common point of view.
