...new electric deer fence. 7 feet tall 7 strands hot...
Did you use the tape or just wire strands? What has worked for me is a two fence approach, 3 feet apart with 1.5" tape and I only energize the outer tape. The inside fence is at 4' off the ground and the outer is only 3' tall. Early in the season, I drip "Deer-Off" on the outside tape... the deer (I hope) remember the smell and jolt, so they stay away when they see the white tape.

In March I put a 31 foot camper up at the top of the road. In April I applied for my building permit. It was just approved Tuesday. I have spent the wait time builder NG a new electric deer fence. 7 feet tall 7 strands hot. And then I started working on an old hunting shack that was rotten. Stripped it down to its bones and added to both sides to make it a storage shed. My excavator has been broken down and I have been waiting on a mechanic to make the trip up here. The know they are busy but I swear you could rely on a hookers promise more than these guys. It gets old having to call people up over and over to see when they are going to show up.
Good to hear of some progress, but that was a long time for a building permit.

Because a large part of this fence will eventually get moved I just did 10 foot poles. 3 feet in the ground with 7 strands of hot steel wire. Previously we had a lazy 3 strand fence that successfully kept them out of the orchard so the 7 foot should do the trick. We are two years away from a harvest so I expect things to change when we have apples. IMG_6790.JPG

Nice looking fence.

How high is the top wire?

...kept them out of the orchard ...
Ah, missed that part... good choice, then... I would still try and make it more visible to them. If they are running, they will not see it also, you don't have to energize above 6-7 feet since to make contact, they will be flying in the air and will not completing the circuit.

I learned that same lesson with my dozer. Before buying, I found several mechanics who said they would come out if something happened, but when something happened, they never showed up. Eventually it turned into a couple of months of calling and waiting, asking around for other mechanics, then calling and waiting some more. Eventually I just decided to figure out how to do it myself. So far, since then, I've bought a lot more really big wrenches and sockets, and managed to figure it out.

What's wrong with your excavator?

I have it running again. But like you said, I did the repair. It hasn't been charging the batteries properly. I just replaced the alternator in January. I am chasing down fuses, etc. In the mean time I have been putting a charger on it each night when I use it, to bring the batteries back up. ?Havn't heard from either of the mechanics I called.

I hadn't even considered that. Thanks.

One of the wiring plans I have seen for fences suggests alternating hot and ground wires, even without good dirt contact they can still give a good zap...
