Fireplace/woodstove gasket

For anyone who never had the experience of owning an old Papa Fisher Bear stove, the doors did not have a gasket. Did not need one, they were made to perfection.

The door of each Fisher wood-burner stove has an authentication mark. This proves that it is an original that was manufactured by Bob Fisher. He produced the doors himself and stamped "Fisher" on the door. The body of the Fisher wood heater was outsourced to be made by licensed manufacturers. - hunker.com

Interesting history about Fisher and those stoves. Him and his buddies used to make the whole shebang. Back in the day, when you invited someone into the house and they knew anything about stoves would, oooh and awww around the Fisher.

I heated my last house for 30 years with a mama bear. Still have it, it's in my workshop now.
Interesting company, if I'm not mistaken only the door assembly was made by Fisher, the rest was fabricated by franchisees. Mine was made in Bow, N.H. Unfortunately, they weren't willing/able to adapt to stricter air quality regulations and closed up shop in the 80s (?).

I'll stick with my biomass corn / pellet stove. No catalytic combustor to fiddle with and keeps the house toasty all the time. Almost 20 years now, no issues what so ever. Have one in the shop as well.

Not allowed here in Michigan for insurance reasons in rental properties.
I know my insurance company called about one of my rentals and asked specifically if it had a wood stove because they saw an old county record picture of the house when it had a chimney. It actually had 2 at different points in time, both were removed.

If I owned a rental property I'm not sure I'd want my tenants to have a woodstove anyway.

My parents had a Franklin stove and it needed no gaskets either! Always fascinated me as a kid that you could see the fire through multiple cracks and gaps but no smoke came out, but my Dad explained the draw from the chimney kept the pulling air into all the gaps and cracks.

I'd probably take it out, if there was one. The knowledge about wood stoves is pretty sparse now.

Back in the day, i was renting a house that had chimney with a trash burner in the kitchen and sheepherders stove in the living room, both hook to the same chimney. The trash burner was broken, cracked burn box compartment, removed it and got a second sheepherders stove. They used to get kinda orangish so i put chunks of cast iron around the inside and solved that problem. Then one night we were talking and my dad was sitting on the floor, next to the stove, when all of a sudden, a jet of flame about 3 feet long shot out of the inlet of the stove and coughed embers on the floor, past the hearth pad, onto the carpet. From then on the cover of the inlet was wired shut so that it couldn't be popped open that way. We still laugh about that, but holy cow.
