One nice thing about ol' Papa was that he is an end loader and can take 30" wood. Note advertisement saying "Will last longer than you will".

Actually a dollar works better. Paper is paper, but dollars are cotton. Wee bit stronger.Dollar bill test is helpful. Close the door on a dollar bill and see if you can pull it out. It should be snug. It does not have to be an actual dollar, any paper strip will do. Go around the door and test it fully.
I've got the papa bear warming the downstairs right now (22 degrees outside, 70 degrees inside). The stove was in the house when we bought it. I've replaced the fire-bricked inside as they break, replaced the door gasket once. It shows no sign of "aging", and I have no plans to replace the stove before I pass on.One nice thing about ol' Papa was that he is an end loader and can take 30" wood. I rented a 2nd floor apartment years ago with a wood stove in it. Several of my coworkers would travel up from Bangor for the week and I would rent a room to them. One night it was 100' F in the apartment when one of the guys went to put more wood on the stove. When I asked him what he was doing he said "I don't want the fire to go out."If I owned a rental property I'm not sure I'd want my tenants to have a woodstove anyway.
Mine was made in Canada.Too bad they don't make them today. The new stuff is made in China and not good.
