... but i'm not sure what will happen when closing on the gravel. will the gravel (which will never be as even as a concrete floor) cause the door safety to automatically reopen the door, thinking it hit an obstruction?

I put a preasure treated 4x6 into my gravel floor on a previous barn that I had. I dug it down so that it would only be about an inch or so above the gravel. For strength, I put it with the 4 inch side up, but don't really know if it matters which way it goes. A 4x4 would probably work just as well. To anchor it, I drilled 3/8 holes through the wood every 12 inches. Then I cut 3/8's or #3 rebar into 18 inch lengths and hammered it through the wood, and into the ground until it was flush with the top of the wood. I sold that barn and the new owner has three tractors and a jeep that he keeps in there. The biggest stractor is about 16,000 pounds, and there's no problems with it moving.

It must be the year for this....
We went up to the island this past weekend to check on things.
I hadn't thought about the canvas garage because the one here at the house had no problems....
Walking up to where the tractor was snuggled in its garage I was surprised to see:

I initially thought a tree had come down on it. But on closer inspection it was just the weight of the snow. The roof was quite dirty with 18 months of tree debris so the snow didn't slide off.

An hour later we had dug the tractor out and peeled off the canvas.

No damage to anything (except the garage). It a good thing my new garage was finally ready with doors and all!

That garage cost me $10/month that it stood there. Best investment yet!

Now that we have the new Garage with doors and all I don't have to worry about the remains of the canvas garage. Here is a shot of my tractor's new home (in the snow....)

On saturday I picked up the rest of the windows and will be installing them soon (as the weather warms up!)
Do you guys think 2 skylights and 3 windows will be enough for the attic ?
3 windows on south wall, 2 windows and windowed door on North wall, and of course the windows in the garage doors. Maybe because I grew up on the prairies I want as much light in as possible. Out here we don't get all that bright sunsine so I want to maximize use of what we do get!

WOW ! FYI , I love winter scenary by the water. (it probably explains why i live a few miles from lake ontario) I like you winter pictures.
As for your portable garage, Its too bad it destroyed now. I know the feeling as mine was destroyed by the winds last spring I still have the cover, all the poles etc. Its the juntion T's connecters that is bent that just needs to be replaced to get the whole thing put back together. Good thing your tractor wasn't harmed though.

Thanks Radioman.
I've always liked the LOOK of winter. After over 20 years in Alberta and Yellowknife I don't need to live it anymore. This is the first serious snow/cold we have had since 1996 so I can't complain. For me serious snow is more than 4" that lasts more than 3 days...

My parents vacationed in Yellowknife and had a wonderful time back in 1997!

Old tractor cover looks terrible. . . new garage looks GREAT!

Snow looks great in the pictures, but yesterday, it was t-shirt weather here. You can't beat that, but I'm jealous of your moisture. It's too darn dry here.

ultrarunner:
Yellowknife is great for a vacation! Its living there, and having snow fly at Labour day and lasting into MAY that got to me. That and the nearest city being 1000 miles away over mostly gravel roads. I hear it is paved now. I was last up there in 1978....

Jim:
We gotta see how we can trade some of this stuff.
I'll take some of your sun for some of our moisture. After living all over Canada I' pretty happy with the temperatures we get here in Victoria.
