Hope you don't mind but some of those sunrise pictures I 'stole' for my desktop backgrounds. They are quite nice.
And sure understand how your arthritis or bones feel. Give the younger guys time it will hit them in about 30 years

Well after the good luck with the concrete it looks like we ran out.
Last Saturday we stopped by in Nanaimo to pick up the Garage doors I ordered on 10 Sep.
I had called about the order a couple of weeks before because no one had called to say they were in. I was told they were in stock and ready to be picked up. When I said I would be in on Saturday they said the location the doors were at was closed on saturday but they would have the doors brought over to the main store location.

We arrived saturday am to find the doors were not there! They called around and then the story turned to : they didn't have the panels with the glass that I ordered over 2 months before. I explained that we had just driven up from Victoria on our way to Denman.
We both had booked off from work for Monday so we would be able to get things closed up with the doors on! $75, fuel, $75 ferry fares and we still had a wide open garage.
Monday we were to go into Cumberland to pick up all the windows, soffits etc. These we would be able to install at our lesuire on weekends over the next month or so.

OK enough ranting.....

We didn't totally waste the weekend....
One of the inside jobs to do was install the Attic ladder. This will be used until a proper set of stairs and a door on the back wall rises to the top of the priority list. (probably next summer). This attic ladder fits between the 2' spaced truss joists. The springs and mechanism is a little close on the shoulders going up but its better than crawling up on the step ladder!

Another job was to install the Man door so we can get in/out once the garage doors are on!

Here we have the garage door openings all trimmed out. I built a quickie landing and step for the man door. I have to run the services along that wall over to where the house will be before building the deck/ steps along the water side.

Don't you just hate dealing with inDUHviduals like the ones at the door supply company. Are you going to complain to the manager after you get your doors to see if they'll compensate you for your fuel and ferry expenses because of their incompetent employee(s)?

I am not sure how i missed the start of this thread but i am here now. Thanks for the pictorial you are doing a great job and that is a beautiful site you have there.

That sure is frustrating, especially when you called beforehand and they told you they were there. To say that you have justification for being upset with them would be an understatement. Are they a national chain? Small individual operation?

Somebody is in charge and in this situation, they should be notified of what happened in writing. Registered mail works better then anything else. Emails just get deleted, but a letter written on paper still gets results.

Explain what happened, when it happened and who you talked to. Then offer them the opportunity to make things right with you. Something like bringing the doors out to your place and installing them for you would be appropriate.

Eddie we think alike...
It was bothering me about what it cost me but I stayed focused on what would actually help to solve the problem. One of the employees suggested that I could get a discount. That wouldn't solve the problem of no garage doors installed.
I talked with the store manager this week and suggested that since I wasn't able to install them it would be real nice if they could. He called back a short while later to say their installer would be going up on tue/wed for some other jobs and would put them in for me.

Too bad it will be several weeks before I get to see them.

The Company is a local family owned operation that started here in Sidney, they now have about a dozen locations on Vancouver Island. Everyone I know of has stories of getting home and finding out that it was 3" nails in the 2-1/2" bin etc. They have a good return policy and will usually go out of their way to try and solve problems. Thats what really counts in the end.

What a nice record of your project! It's a really attractive design, and your property must be a slice of heaven. Just had new garage doors put in myself. Missed a day of work due to misunderstanding "delivery" and "installation", but was happy with the end result. Sounds like you worked out a good solution in your case. I'll look forward to more pics! We used a 7 inch metal cutoff blade in the skil-saw for most of the cuts. (Well 6 of them actually). It is weird having the blade on the skil-saw get smaller during a cut. Then the blade would try and walk up on the metal.
I'm hopling these wheels will work for heavier metal for other projects.

Your garage is looking terrific. Building in your area sure is different from down here. One tip I want to tell you about on cutting sheetmetal. I used the abrasive blades and could only cut across three panels before the blade was gone. I changed my blade to one of the segmented metal blades and it was like night and day. The blade worked perfectly. I cut and cut with it and never had to replace it. I recommend you try one of these the next time you cut sheetmetal.

Thanks Jim, I had heard about these blades but no one had any instock. Store after store had an empty spot on thir display, but no blades! I got some 5 packs of the 7" abrasive wheels for my skill saw and went at it. Now that I'm done for now, all the stores have the other kind in stock!

Building up here is differnent than what I read about for most of you. I keep looking for tricks for building on solid rock, but there isn't too much out there. I hope all the prof. engineers and contractors know what to do but some days I wonder...

Last night my neighbor on Denman called to say the installer came an installed my garage doors ! Yeah ! Finally I'm to Lockup! He tried them out and said they work great.

I'm off in the morning in the other direction to HUX and PXM. We'll be back in time for Xmas.

Congratulations. It's nice to hear about them making good for you.

Now that you can close up the place, it will be allot easier to get some work done this winter.

Congratulations! That's a big step in the right direction.:)

Did the installer put a garage door opener on the doors? If not, are you planning to install them yourself? As silly as this might sound, I think there is nothing I like better about my house than having a garage door opener. I installed it myself and it has worked perfectly for 6 years.

Good things come to them that wait...Hate being put on hold though because others are trying to get your business by stretching the truth as far as product availability/delivery time...Have been doing my own home kitchen/dining room bump out over the past few months and have run into this problem more than once...Frustrating...Your project is looking very good.

Jim:
we are waiting until we proper power to the garage to install openers. Since this will be coming from the house panel we will wait until the house gets to this stage probably about a year away.

We have seen enough of delays like our doors that we are taking our time and proceeding one stage at a time. If we were doing this in town we would have several options for suppliers and trades, but up on the island we know it we try to do too much too fast the schedule will just turn into a nightmare.

speaking of garage door openers.... anyone have any experience installing one in a pole barn with a gravel floor?

in order to get my door opened high enough for my tractor's rop to fit under, we have to prop it up with a 2x4. you know where this is going, last week my teenage son forgot the 2x4 and backed out of the barn, smashing the bottom panel of the door with the rop.

so now i'm thinking garage door opener. i believe it will lift the door high enough to clear the rop, but i'm not sure what will happen when closing on the gravel. will the gravel (which will never be as even as a concrete floor) cause the door safety to automatically reopen the door, thinking it hit an obstruction?

Sorry about the damage. I think that problem is pretty common.

If I wanted the door to stop at the same spot over gravel, I'd put a very small pad (treated wood or concrete patio block) at each door facing. Make the door hit the pads just before the gravel. You will have a slight gap under the door, but it won't re-open. Of course, the best way would be to pour a small curb across the full width of the door as a lip for the door to close against.
