Yup ... my Massey 1648 (it also has a digital display showing exactly what speed the PTO is turning)
Now that's a handy feature.

The old tractors were designed to run lower engine rpms. That gave them torque. The new designs run higher rpm as they have less torque, but get MORE hp due to the higher rpms.

The thing to do is just set the rpm to get 540 pto and go. The old iron will run lower rpm the new will run higher. Both get the job done. No need to over think.

The RPMs everyone is posting is right where Im at, 2350 to get to 540 on the tiller. The one thing I did notice though was that no matter how deep or how hard the ground was the Engine RPM never faltered, even climbing really steep stuff with the tiller engaged.
My previous experience with tillers and bush hogs was on a 9N which barely turned any rpm to get to PTO speed.

I had 3 Masseys over the years; TO 20, like your N series and a gas and diesel MF 35. The one I liked the most was the MF 35 with the Perkins 3 cyl diesel. PTO rpm was 1600, like some Fords I have/had, but the Perkie torque curve peaked at 1000 rpm. You try loading that little sucker up and it was a waste of time. I'd still have it but the clutch springs were way too heavy for my left leg and it got to be too much.
