Re: First maintenance on 422....hidden \"zerk\"

I drilled a little hole for my zerk to peep through but I drilled it just a shade too high so now mine has a nice little v groove in it just like fourteens . The v groove looks alright and I have convinced myself that was what I really wanted in the first place

Re: First maintenance on 422....hidden \"zerk\"

On my recent PT-425 the zerk is where the 2 covers meet. Therefore, a V was required!

I grease all fittings every 8 hours. There are only 5 zerks on the PT-425!!!!

I would rather remove 2 bolts to remove the cover at grease time! I am too lazy to clean the crap out of the tunnel if operated without the cover!!

"" I spoke with Terry about that fitting. He said that one needs greased every 50 hrs ""

The Power Trac Owner's Manual says 4 fittings every 8 hours, and 1 fitting every 50 hours. Why not just do them all at 8~10 hours??!!?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Lot's of !!!!s there, but mine has eight zerks, implements excluded. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Remember, there are different versions of the PT-425. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: First maintenance on 422....hidden \"zerk\"

For such major maintenance, maybe you could hire someone to help you with the additional three fittings!!

Or, buy a new PT-425, then you would only have 5 fittings to do!!

NJBILL
You may want to consider going with a flush zerk fitting. I have gone over many ridges that would have taken a zerk out that was outside of the frame.

Re: First maintenance on 422....hidden \"zerk\"

/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I'll second that!! A zerk sticking out like that wouldn't last an hour on my PT!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: First maintenance on 422....hidden \"zerk\"

I don't see any danger of njbill breaking that particular fitting off while operating the machine it has leg guards around it while it is being operated, maybe a big foot might break it off. On mine though I used a 45 and it just peeps through the hole it don't have its head sticking out. If the bases of the zerks had been bigger I would have ran all my zerks through hoses to a central location but the 8hr service is no big deal . Iam like fourteen on the one grease fitting I grease it every 8hrs along with the others.

Re: First maintenance on 422....hidden \"zerk\"

Thanks for the heads up on the link ends. I checked mine on the 425 and all of them were spinning on the bolts. Tightened most of them up there are still a few that I,m going to install a washer on to take up some of the slack as tightening them will bend the attachments to much. The front of the center link on the 425 also is sloppy. Is this supposed to be like that or just a bad job by PT.

Re: First maintenance on 422....hidden \"zerk\"

I think the ZERK they are concerned about is the one facing the ground under the bottom center link. That one could get snapped off if you get over a log or large rock.

My Pt 425 has two zerks on the loader arms, three on the main links and 3 on the treadle assembly.

One lubrication issue I have concerns with is the sleeves that have a bolt going through them and then the sleeve go through a swivel eye, for example, the point where the loader arms attach to the unit. The swivel eye gets lube every 8 hours and I spray the ends of the sleeves, but I doubt much lube can penetrate through the entire length of the sleeve to surround the bolt. Anyone else have this concern?

I was wondering if a small diameter hole was drilled down the center of the bolt, then a cross hole was drilled about the middle of where the sleeve would be. This would create a grease passage. I could then enlarge the small hole end and tap a grease zeerk in it. Wonder if the work would be worth it VS just spraying the heck out of it every 8 hours. Also wonder if it would significantly weaken the bolt. I could try it on a spare bolt, just to see how hard it would be. Wouldn't cost that much to try. Just the cost of a bolt, grease zerk, two drill bits and a tap.
