That's the one I photographed through the mirror, the one with the missing zerk. I thought my tractor was going to break in two, until I installed a washer as you are going to do. What a difference.

Once the bolts get tightened you will find that the ball, or swivel, ends of the links have enough play for a thin lubricant to cover the whole moving sections. I don't use a spray lube, I use the same as one of the long time members. I had a lithium cartridge laying around so now I have a screw top jar with some lithium, a clear penetrating oil, [not WD40] and a touch of gasoline all mixed together. I believe all my links are now working in the way they were designed to do.

Thanks all, about the protruding zerk I use the gun often enough to keep checking that one. I figure being able to ensure proper greasing by being able to see no leakage as I pump. is worth an occasional broken zerk.
'Keep up the good surveillance of our problems, as a mechanic there was nothing better than a good old nuts and bolts session.

Re: First maintenance on 422....hidden \"zerk\"

(One lubrication issue I have concerns with is the sleeves that have a bolt going through them and then the sleeve go through a swivel eye)

These are the links we are talking about. They are not supposed to spin on the bolt only on the ball. You can tighten the bolts to stop them from spinning on most of the links. On mine tightening a few of them will bend the attachments in to far so I will install a spacer on those.

I would rather remove 2 bolts to remove the cover at grease time! I am too lazy to clean the crap out of the tunnel if operated without the cover!!

I find on my 1845 that mowing chaff ends up in there anyway, cover or no cover, so removing the cover just adds a step /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: First maintenance on 422....hidden \"zerk\"

interesting....thanks for the pics, I missed that center pivot zerk underneath. After seeing how much debris gets accumulated under the plates I'm thinking I'll just take the plates off and grease as is. I noticed in Moss Roads 425 there are zerks near the treadle assembly, mine doesn't have any there. I guess the PT will stayed clean and well greased for awhile...seems we can't get through a day without rain anymore!

Re: First maintenance on 422....hidden \"zerk\"

That's because you have the newer design that uses a different method for the treadle. I think your's is a valve and mine is some pivot points that pull a cable system. They need the lube. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
