try turning engine over with a breaker bar and socket
Don't mean to be critical, but always use a ratcheting breaker bar when turning over diesel engine in the direction of normal rotation. If indeed it does try and fire, the ratchet will spin, and not throw you across garage. This goes for any maintenance work, not just in this case.
