Today unfortunately... we had some unwanted visitors. Lady Bugs and Spotted Cucumber Beetles... seven dust to the entire garden. That stuff has gotten very expensive since I purchased it last. They must have added gold to it or something /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They had eaten a lot of my young cucumber leaves off and left nothing but the stem. They also had done 4 of my eggplants the same way. Lady Bugs had gotten to my potatos but not too much damage... maybe I caught them in time.

I plowed up the upper part of my land near the road and planted 2 kinds of watermelons, eggplants, and pumpkins. Maybe one or two more spots to plow and plant since I have gotten some more seed. It's almost too late to plant so I must get them in the ground. Fortunately we have a bit longer growing season here in SC.

Just wanted to update you on some things happening. Have a Great Day and Thank you all for your help, support and prayers.

Jim, lady bugs are not vegetarian. They eat only other bugs and aphids. Unfortunately, if you put out Sevin for other bugs, you get the lady bugs too. What can you do? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Oh my... I sure hate that they get killed in the fight to keep my vegetables growing. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I never have liked to use any kind of chemicals but the beetles give me no choice if I am to have a good harvest. If anyone else has some ideals please let them be known. I mixed a small amount of dish detergent with water and the sevin dust to make it stick. Actually I have been told that just one ounce of dish detergent per gallon will deter the critters eating my plants. I may try that next without seven dust.

I will try to take some pictures tomorrow of the plants close up so all of you can see the progress of the plants. The pumpkins, squash and zuchinni are all doing well. The corn seems a bit slow in my book. But we have had some cool nights that seems to slow the growth of everything.

I still have not gotten the irrigation system in. They have been some back orders of parts we need. I guess everyone needed the same parts all the sudden and a little order like mine got put on the back burner /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

All of you have a Great Weekend. I will post pictures as soon as I can tomorrow.

Jim, what you have there are potato bugs, or "tater bugs" as the old timers would tell you. What you really need is some diazinon if you can find it. Don't worry about killing a few lady bugs, Clemson University released millions of them by helicopter into the local govt. forests for the fight against the pine beetle, so I've been told. Since that time, we have been infested with the critters. They get into houses, buildings, and I even had em in my new truck . How they got in I don't know but I don't think you will hurt the population of them with your seven dust. The potato bugs are really bad up here, they hit the potato vines, tomato, and a lot of other green leaf they will eat. "good luck"

There are some will say that chickens and geese make short work of bugs and may even weed a bit ??

I like that ideal... especially the benefits of fresh eggs. I would prefer banny's. Anyone have a dozen or so bannies they want to get rid of?

I have some pictures to show you here today. It seems to me everything is growing slow but maybe that is just me.

The tomato plants seem to be doing great.
