Hi Jim. Your garden is looking darn good. I think you are a couple of weeks behind me because I've already gathered about 1/2 bushel of squash and lots of banana peppers. I've got a "ton" of tomatoes on the vines starting to turn. They may start being picked this weekend. The only pest I've had lately are some little green worms eating the leaves on one pepper plant. A little 5% Sevin took care of them.

I had a lot of grasshoppers appearing, but we mowed down the tall grass around the garden and put up a small bird feeder. As a result, I'd say we reduced that population by 75%. If you can cut that tall grass, you may keep the 'hoppers away. I'm not sure they are a problem there, but they sure are here. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Hi Scotty!

Good to hear from you again.

You bet stuffed Peppers are great. U have a total of about 75 to 100 pepper plants spread about in the garden. It's great nutrition as well.

This week had been very hot and humid... and has caused my garden to start growing quickly.

Starting tomorrow we have more storms moving in but maybe they won't be too bad. These storms concern me a bit because of the heavy down pours. Not good to have open or fresh trenches on a hill. It's possible for the dirt to wash out of the trenches. I may put off installing the irrigation system until the storms are not as frequent.

We are also needing some stone to put under each post and sprinkler for the drain system when they turn off for freeze protection of our system onced it is installed. This should be washed stone for this so the water will drain. We have 32 to 40 post to install and should have about 24 inches of stone in each one for the draining of the heads and lines feeding them. Anyone have some washed stone they want to get rid of?

I hope this season is a good season. Many people are depending on me for food. I hope that I will be able to help more than I planned. If we have a good crop like it seems like we will have, I will be able to help even more.

Have a Great Day.

Jim

The unseasonably cool weather stunted my garden. Now the weather has warmed and the garden is doing much better. Unfortunately... the weather is one factor I can not control. I have done what I could as far as the watering but the temperature is something I have no control over. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I mowed most of it but my 4 ft King Kutter Bush Hog has the four bolts holding the gear box on very loose now. I don't have the tools to repair such large bolts nor the money left to have it repaired. Hopefully I can get another Bush Hog and this time a 5 ft BH. My tractor is 5 ft 6 inches wide and I need a 5 footer to cut most of the tracks out. Also the tall grass in the major water way helps control washing until I can get an aerator to break up the soil and plant a better stand of grass. The grass seed has sky rocketed here. Hopefully I will continue to get it in better shape as time goes by. I am working full time now and doing this project. Unfortunately I do not have the time to do a better job /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I wish I could pay my bills and support this project and not have to work anything except the Food Project. I haven't found a way to do this as of yet. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Thanks for the input... I hope the Food Project does well. I will dedicate all my spare time to this project. It is so desperately needed.

Have a Great Day and keep us in your prayers.

Jim

Hello JIM,
Like your pictures, especially the fertilizer one. That stuff is like gold now, I paid $8.50 a bag for it at town , then decided I would buy a ton to save a little money. Although you are only about 5 miles from me 'as a crow flies" you have gotten a lot more rain. We missed about 3 of the rains you got so I had to by about $200.00 worth of 3/4 " hose pipe, take my backhoe and dig a line and put 1" pvc to a yard hydrant and I've been draggin hoses. I have 4 rain birds that cover 5800 sq. foot each and by moving them twice I can water my entire acre and a half garden. I have watered it about 3 different times and to be honest with you it is the sorryest looking garden I've had in several years. Watering is expensive seed and fertilize are expensive but I after I put up all we need for the winter and give to my friends and neighbors, ( Personally in my 41 years, I've never saw a homeless person in this town ) I let my son gather and sell and keep the money. He also has to help work the garden but I do all the spending without complaint. Such a small price to keep him outside and off the video games , T.V. and computer. Also I figure it may mold him into someone who takes pride and enjoyment in it when he is a grown man, I guess much like my Dad did for me. To make a long story short, What used to be hard work for me as a young boy is now relaxation and enjoyment. Heres a few pics of my acre and a half garden project. Heres a pic of approx. 600 ft. of Pontiac red potatoes, 300 ft. of straightneck squash that we picked our first pickin day before yesterday. bout a half bushel. and some tomatoes and peppers. Also merit sweet corn that was planted about a week after easter.
