First Use of FEL Snowplow

My loader plow has float but not via a chain. For it to work well the plow A frame pivot need to be about 6" off the ground like the truck mount with the blade floating on skids or on the cutting edge once everything is frozen. Because a loader sticks out so far, on terrain that undulates, you need to adjust the loader up and down even with the float.

Without the float, I can't imagine how you would adjust it to keep the right weight on the cutting edge unless the ground is very smooth.

I have a plow on my truck and it's much tougher and messier when the ground is not frozen. Add the weight of the loader for your tractor and it's worse. The shoes only do so much because they also sink into the soft ground but getting them level consistently would help. Someone else mentioned a bucket leveling tube, marking it for where the plow is optimal would be a good thing. So where's the pictures? :)

thats why im so interested with putting caster wheels on my plow. i will keep the plow about 3/4 inch off the gravel to make a frozen base. shoes just dig in...

Thanks for all the good suggestions. So far this winter we have only had one snowfall and that was only 3" or 4". It seems to me you would also keep the loader arm weight off the blade if you run with the skid shoes off the ground and tilt the blade slightly forward. However I agree, that only works on even terrain.
Is the purpose of the chain to keep the blade going back to the same location every time you tilt the blade forward?
This could get interesting if we get a big snowfall. I don't like the idea of practicing with snow up to the tractor seat.
Oh well, live and learn. I can hardly wait for the next snow storm.

The reason for the chain is so that the loader weight is not also pushing the blade into the ground. You would not use float, just drop the arms enough to see the chain slacken so you have the weight of the blade itself on the ground. It would work more like it does on a truck. BTW, you'll really like that blade if you get a pile of snow that you need to stack high and out of the way. That is where they shine.

I have a chain set up for my plow. I welded two hooks on the loader arms to slip the plow chains into. It works great when the ground is frozen, not so when it isn't. Can't imagine trying to plow on gravel using float, seems much more diffucult. However if my setup was float I would probably use it and become proficient...
Have to agree with KabotainNH about how it shines when pushing snow banks back. Pretty awsum how the unit pushes those huge piles.
Hopefully I will get to plow this year!

I dont understand why you need a chain at all as long as the loader arms are set to float.???

Good advertisement for a snow blower, how many times the same snow has to be driven over and moved from one spot to another?

No offense if this is yours, just saying that looks like snow blower country.

no its a video i came upon on youtube. just happens the guy is also from northern maine. i agree with the snowblower preference, thats why i have one also. i think the guy was plowing over the blade on purpose to show how hard it can push. using that plow and a blower on the back for snow banks would be a very fast way to get rid of snow. i have thought of doing this too but i like my setup too much to change it.

I've seen that video several times and there are others uploaded by the same guy.

His video is actually an advertisement. He manufactures and sells the frame connecting the loader to the (Fisher) plow. I don't think he sells tractors or plows...just the frame.
