Tiller Five-foot Tiller with Ford NAA

Some people do prefer HSt for tillage, I do not. I want to set a good ground speed and till without having to fuss with the go pedal constantly as I do with the HST in the Kubota. For that reason, the WH is better because it will just crawl along and till leaving my feet to rest for the next turn.

HST or gear is personal preference, I simply prefer gear for tilling. The HST is great for mowing the yard with all the trees however.

As I remember, howard made an aux transmission that cut the speed in half. Thing is, it also cut the pto speed in half. They made the howard tiller and geared it accordingly to get tine speed.

In the early 50's it was the first tractor I was initiated with. Still a lot of them around, great plow, disc, haymowing and windrow tractor.

Howard reduction units do not affect PTO speeds. They were designed to compliment Howard Rotovators, which required slower than stock ground speeds while maintaining PTO RPM's. Something the far more popular and plentiful Sherman auxiliary transmission could not accomplish. The Sherman fits ahead of the transmission, the Howard behind it.

That sounds a little optomistic to me since the engine was only 31 HP

I dont think they will run slow enough for tiller work, even with the 2 speed transmissions

They will work -FINE- with one of the post trans I mentioned. In fact. that was the exact reason those post trans were designed.

As far as tractor data.. their info is dubious at best.. I'd safely call the naa 30 pto hp... 8n were 27 pto hp.. my naa will run a 6' rough mower whereas an 8n would choke up on it in all but light material..

I currently own a Kubota B3030, and I run a 5' KKII tiller behind it. It works great. Love how the tiller works in conjunction with the HST.

My previous tractor was a '53 Ford Jubilee -- same as your NAA. I didn't have the tiller when I had the old Ford, but I don't think it would've worked well.

The Ford was great for plowing and bush hogging, but having experienced both tractors and knowing what I know now, I wouldn't put a tiller behind the Ford. As others have said, it's too fast in low gear & you're stuck with a manual transmission.

With my hard clay, I need to go almost at a crawl to get good results. The HST on the Kubota makes that easy. It would've been difficult if not impossible on the Ford.

fords of that era were not rototiller friendly as stock.. they pulled a 2 bottom plow very well though.

It is 31hp at the PTO, not the engine. Up until recently all tractors were rated by PTO hp which IMO is much more meaningful than today's Engine HP rating.

I have a '53 Ford NAA (Jubilee) and I wouldn't even consider it for running a tiller. First gear is 2.77mph at 1500rpms (which is PTO speed), so its way too fast for tilling. Also, it doesn't have a live PTO so you basically are limited to starting the tiller out of the ground and dropping it down to get started.

If you have some ground to work a 12" or 14" two bottom plow and 5-6' tandem disc would be much better suited to a Ford NAA. You could also buy both for less than the cost of a new tiller.

We have been selling tractors and equipment almost 33 years here in Ky and I agree with the above poster. The disc and plow would be better suited and less expensive for that tractor--Ken Sweet

I have a 1954 NAA. A tiller behind it does not work well. The PTO on this old Ford is not a live PTO. By the time you get the PTO up to the proper speed for your rear attachment the ground speed of the tractor is to fast for the attachment to work correctly. I have the same issue with a 3 point snow blower. I have a 5' King Kutter brush cutter and that works well, although I have an over-run clutch on the tractor's PTO.

WOW! Just looked up the specs on your NAA on TractorData.com - information on all makes and models of tractors and that is a high ground speed (3.6mph @ 2000rpm) for 1st gear. I mow in 4th low on my Kubota and one day out of curiosity I got my GPS to track my speed and I was doing 2.5-2.9mph @ 2340rpm.
Is there the opposite of a gear reducer that would allow you to get your PTO speed for implements while having a lower rpm on the tractor?
Or could a gear reducer be installed backwards?
