Tiller Five-foot Tiller with Ford NAA

Found this.
Its specs gave rpms at 540rpm. That's a familiar number.

Is there the opposite of a gear reducer that would allow you to get your PTO speed for implements while having a lower rpm on the tractor?
Or could a gear reducer be installed backwards?

so far 2 of us have mentioned HOW you go about using a tiller on an old ford. you get a howard post tranny.

as far back as post #5 that was mentioned.

I have a 1954 NAA. A tiller behind it does not work well. The PTO on this old Ford is not a live PTO. By the time you get the PTO up to the proper speed for your rear attachment the ground speed of the tractor is to fast for the attachment to work correctly. I have the same issue with a 3 point snow blower. I have a 5' King Kutter brush cutter and that works well, although I have an over-run clutch on the tractor's PTO.

has nothing to do with live pto or not live pto... has to do with ground speed vs pto speed and engine rpm... fords before the 8spd and the 10spd have TALL gears... not great for tillers without aux post trans help.

if it was already plowed and disked it would probably work ok to smooth out and fluff up the soil real quick, but like other have said the ground speed would be way to high for the tiller to dig in under normal conditions.

I would think a HST is better for tilling because of the variable speed ability.

I certainly think a tractor with HST is much better for tilling. The infinite ground speed makes it much easier to work implements that use the PTO, especially if the horsepower you have is a bit under or border line for the task and equipment.

Are the Howard gear reduction units expensive? General or average sale price? Do they still make them?

Thanks- Oldstuff
