\"Flat monitor\" recommendations?

I've got a 21" monitor beheamoth sitting on my desk. Frankly, I love it. I run it at 2048 x 1536 resolution and if I could run it higher I would.

That said, we've moved our office and in the new place, the wife is "redoing" several things (new desk, new chairs, adding molding, adding wall paper...)

One of the things she insists I get rid of is my 21". She says "big monitors are passe' and thin are in"

Be that as it may, I like and USE most all of my screen real estate.

Ok, so if I give in and go acquire another monitor of the thin variety, what are some suggestions for one that will allow a high quality picture and high (usable) resolution?

Thanks for any ideas

Re: \"Flat monitor\" recommendations?

Good question, Richard, and I'll be interested in the responses myself. I'd like to have one of the flat monitors myself, but wouldn't know which one to get and don't want to spend the money as long as this old 17" Dell is working right. But if it ever dies, I'll be looking for a flat screen.

Re: \"Flat monitor\" recommendations?

Any idea who makes those? I doubt that Dell is in the business of making monitors...??

If you got the manufacturers brand, would it be cheaper than the "branded" Dell (insert any name)?

Richard...

I've been in "the computer biz" for over 30 years. The best current site for pain free computer related purchases and delivery is NewEgg. I’ve purchased every thing from motherboards to monitors from them over the last 5 years and have never had a problem and their prices are very competitive. Here is a link to their site.

A suggestion - if you live closed to a large university check to see if there is a for sale newsgroup. I live close to Texas A & M and was looking at their forsale newsgroup. Graduating students frequently sell all knids of things very cheap prices. This particularly applies to foriegn graduate students. I was seeing flat panel monitors last night for $50.00. These type of sales are calendar dependent. It was obvious that many were trying to get out of their appartments before Aug 1.

Re: \"Flat monitor\" recommendations?

I recently bought a 19" Samsung 930B LCD flat monitor. It was to replace my old 19" Gateway which was losing its brightness, and pictures looked dark.
I like the size (didn't consider the 21" very long), but I do not like the 'scroll' which is quite different from the old monitor. The scroll is blurry and visually annoying comparatively speaking. I use (or did) the roller button on the mouse, but with this flatscreen, it almost makes you sick looking at it scroll. I now use the page up or page down, as then the new page seems to flash up at once rather than in a blurred movement past the screen.
Not a way to change this that I can see or find. If I'd found this out two days sooner I would have taken it back. But I do like everything else about it.

Re: \"Flat monitor\" recommendations?

I've got the opposite situation, I have a 17" Envision flatpanel and I'm going back to a 21" monitor, I think I'm gonna love the extra real estate - on the screen! But these big CTR monitors really only work well on a corner desk, where you can get the screenface far enough away from your own.
BTW, mine does not blur when I scroll either........unless I've been online too long! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: \"Flat monitor\" recommendations?

Many digital photographers -- who have to deal with preparing digital images for printing -- have recommended the Viewsonic VP912b 19" LCD Monitor.

I currently have a 17" Dell Flatscreen, but will be upgrading -- most likely to this Viewsonic -- in the near future.
