I've been in small aircraft where the cars down on the road were going much faster than us up in the air.

I've also seen a guy take a small plane off, fly it backwards, and land it right where he took off from. That was entertaining! (y)

Late last night I was reading on my tablet and heard a very loud jet pass over head. Looked at the Flight Aware and it was an Airbus 380 from Texas heading to Dubai. I think I heard it the night before but Flight Aware did not show anything. I don't know WHY I heard the plane since it was two hours into it's flight and had to be way, way up there. I did not notice it's altitude though.

Since it is a four engine plane it catches my attention because most of the passenger planes I see are two engines.

Yep. Most are now two engines. The 4 engines are predominately 747 freighters, Airbus 380s, the occasional Lufthansa 747, and a lot of 707 military variants.

Were you in NC when you heard it? That would be strange. The usually go up over Michigan coming and going between Dubai and anything west of the Mississippi.

Yep, it flew over NC. Looks like they fly out once day or at least very frequently. I am pretty sure I heard the same plane a day or two prior but I have not heard it or seen it on Flight Aware before. My guess is they were flying a bit to the south due to the low pressure system? Though that low pressure was just off the NC coast by the time the A380 flew over. 🤷‍♂️

While I did not notice it's altitude, I did notice it's speed. The planned speed was supposed to be 580-590 but it was doing 700. I assume it hit some favorable upper level winds. :D

Got lucky last night to remember that A380 flight, looked for the plane going from Texas to Dubai, and found it. The plane was about 50 miles away from me, and I had to enlarge the view I normally use to see the A380, but there she was at 33,000 feet and going faster than planned.

I have a cottage just north of Traverse City, Michigan. It is amazing how many planes from Europe drop down over the Traverse City area as well as a number of routes from the east coast going west over Traverse City. Can make for a lot of entrails at times. We are also on the route of the Coast Guard helicopters and the military planes heading over to Fort Grayling.
