Fluid level and capacity

I did the 50 hr service on my B2620 last weekend. I replaced all filters and changed the hydraulic fluids. According to the manual, the front axle and that transmission holds about 5 gals of UDT fluid. When I took all the fluids out I didn't produce 5 gals. And when I put the new fluid back in, I had about 1/2 gal left. The level on both the transmission and the front axle are above the max level - by about 1/4 inch. The questions are:
1. Will it hurt to leave the fluids on the transmission and front axle above max?
2. Why didn't I produce 5 gal when I drained the fluids?

I empty all the drain plugs until it was just dripping slowly.

The engine oil changed was OK.

I have never found anything that holds the exact amount of fluid specified. My Bx 2200 held about a pint more engine oil than specified before it read full on the dipstick, and a friend's held even more.
I don't think a quarter inch is anything to worry about.

You're not alone. I had the same concern on my 300 hour for BX2350. Front axle is supposed to take 4.7 litres. It was filled too high and I still had .5 of a litre to go. Rather than worry about the overfill, I used an old turkey baster to suck out the amount it was over the fill line. I checked the dipstick the other day just to see if level was down and it was still fine.

You may also find the front axle level drops a little after some use. Apparently there are some tight squeezes before the oil gets into the bevel housings.
