Hmmm, That's an interesting thought. Maybe that's why I've never sharpened my blades. Couldn't be laziness, could it? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Have you thought about hiring someone to spray it for broadleafs? That should knock them down for several years. The ones that do sprout would be really small and easily cut without leaving punji sticks in the field.

You could also pasture some hungry sheep in there a while. We used them to clean up our woods and they are very effective. Just find someone with a flock that needs a place to be and give their pasture a rest for a year.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts above. Stevenf - your pricing seems very similar to what I have been quoted given your larger tire size. I have decided now to go ahead and fill. I appreciate you sharing your experience with the filled tires. Dateacha - I do think some spraying is in my future as well. The CRP program is in the process of developing new regulations and I think in future years, instead of mowing, we are looking at strip disking about 1/3 of the grassland per year, or applying chemicals and mowing about the same amount. Then in succeeding years, you do a different 1/3 until in 3 years everything has been covered. My fear is that it will be 3 years on any given slice of ground between whatever treatment is chosen, and I may still wind up with the spears in the field. I guess I can't complain too much as long as they are paying the bills. Thanks to all. Great forum, great info.

I have heard that the do effect the ride. Some friends add foam to the ATV tires, heavy and no bounce. Beats the flats though.

I don't know why I can't resist replying to these older threads. Hopefully I am not irritating anyone.

I am in the tire business. One of our locations does foam fill. I just had some tires foam filled for myself. The cost was $1.15 per pound. That location's cost on the product is .95 per pound.

How much space will a pound of foam fill? (Better question, how many pounds to fill, let's say, a 14.9X28 tire/wheel?)

UPDATE - Tires have been filled and tractor is returned as promised. I found out that the company that I used to fill the tires used a product called TyrFil. It is a urethane rubber that is pumped into the tire and which replaces the air in the tire.

Here's the link to the mfg site:

http://www.hyperlastna.com/products/tyrfil/main.htm

My initial impression has been positive. I put about 4 hours on the tractor this weekend dragging a harrow over a pond bank for reseeding, and running a bush hog. I could not tell much difference in the ride as relates to comfort. The weight difference between the TyrFil and the liquid that the dealer had originally installed was noticable. While I know this is subjective, the ride just felt more stable (less bouncy, less sideways shift when running on an incline) and the wooden floor in my shed that I park it in complained quite a bit more than usual when I parked. I think I included the exact weight that was added in my first post on this thread. I am satisfied so far and am curious if I will ever notice much difference between this solid fill and a liquid fill in terms of performance. The main benefit for me so far is the "pucker factor" when riding over my field of spear tips is much lower than before. Thanks again to all for the insight and advice that was shared.

This question has been on my mind for some time regarding foam filling of tires.
I always had heard that if you foam filled your tire that the tire repair places would not work on that tire.
Is there anything to this? or, is there a product better than another that would not cause a problem?

If you have a problem with the tire, it would need to be replaced not repaired. However, since you won't be having flats, the repairman probably wouldn't be seeing you anyway.

You would replace worn out tires anyway, right?
