Will there be a food shortage in the US and Canada this fall/winter?

Will the Corona Virus cause problems with the farms, with harvesting table crops, with processing facilities, with the delivery systems, or with the retail systems?

Me and my family are putting out one large and two small gardens. We are planning on canning more veggies than usual and using the freezers mostly for meat. Better to be prepared and not need it than to be hungry.

Any thoughts??

Good plan either way IMO.

I shop at Walmart. With the exception of toilet paper and flour, the shelves are fairly well stocked.

Chain grocery stores are still running loss-leader weekly ads. If the chains anticipated food shortage they would not promote loss-leaders.

Still, my pantry is fuller than normal. I bought two (2) packages of Lentils during my last Walmart run.

I am more concerned with the Fed and Treasury $four-trillion to $6-trillion into the $22 trillion economy. Potential for great harm to savings/retirement of the middle-class through inflation.

I am more concerned with climate change impact on crops long term, than Covid-19 effect on supply chain short term.

I'm not too concerned at this point, but I'm not sure why eggs have gone to $3.50/dzn. Almost considering getting some chickens.

Slaughterhouses and meat packing plants are having shutdowns and workforce reductions right now. Paranoia is affecting the supply of migrant workers to pick and process vegetables and produce. Local chain markets weekly flyers are one page, not 6.

I have concerns. We are keeping the freezer full of proteins and bought a CSA share from a local farm we patronized off and on last year, something we had never given a minutes thought to.

That's the concern that I have... the Australian government has told all Working Visa/Backpacker Visa holders that, if you cannot support yourself, LEAVE, 'cause we're not going to support you with welfare. Heck, even the accommodation arrangements for the 'pickers' will have to vastly change.

Unless the criteria for receiving the dole (welfare) changes; berry, fruit, wine grapes... picked produce crops are going to be down due to not being able to bring them in.

Cities & large towns will also encounter meat shortages due to the volume required. We're OK, here in a small town like St Helens, as, being farther away from the 'big smokes', we haven't lost our local capacity to locally slaughter & butcher. Local bakeries are still a 'thing' in small towns too.
