For Sale to China

We got our USA made furniture from North Carolina. Now, this was a few years ago but I'd hope it's the same now (USA made).
We drove to Hickory and High Point, NC and the amount of furniture stores there is incredible.

We had it shipped. It was cheap if you could wait a few weeks.

If you find something in your area, get the mfgr, style... and call down there. By purchasing direct, we saved close to 50%.

Do a google search on "hickory NC Furniture". Looks like you can do internet orders now.

That isn't a problem as we you have to wait a few weeks for the other stores to ship from China.

Richard,

My wife deals with these furniture stores in N.C. all the time in her business. If you're still looking for additional pieces, I'll check with her about which manufacturer's are the best and get you some contact information.

Ethan Allan is also made in america. This can be a process they do not make the furniture until you order it and it will take 6 to 8 weeks to get depending on how busy the plant is. This furniture is top of the line and priced that way also. Just the bedroom furniture we bought was over 5000.00 and the entertaiment center for the living room was over 3900.00, but I expect this stuff will last my life time and many others very well built.

FWIW, we also priced the stores in NC, but nobody beat the prices we got from Basista when shipping and set up was included in the price. The prices were close, but I think the shipping might have been the larger factor as OH is closer than NC to where I live. I'm sure there are dozens of other places too.

By the way, ditto what spencer200 said, we have a dining room set from Ethan Allen in our dinette. It is nice stuff and well built, I liked the service they provided with sending out a designer to help with fabric choices, etc. It is also moderately pricy, certainly higher than many brands. But again, I think you get what you pay for. There is a BIG difference in quality and craftsmanship between fine furniture and the stuff you find in the warehouse style furniture stores.

Strange as it might seem, this was my sentiment on TBN about a year ago in a comment about Walmart and China. Everyone told me that buying from China was good for our economy. Unfortunately, most still shop for the least expensive and don't care where it is made or who looses, as long as they save. You might just say that we are in the minority until more people realize that buying American made products isn't just patriotism, but make good sense also. How soon we forget and forgive the Country that shot down our plane little more than 3 years ago. Read about it here......

We must have a different Ethan Allen here or they changed their buying because according to the salesman 80% of what they sold was from China.

Most of the upscale stuff around here seems to be coming from NC or else NY. Look for folks like Stickley, Baker, King Hickory, Vanguard, Kincaid, Lexington, Century, Drexel, Hancock & Moore, and I think Lane. Last I looked into them, most if not all their lines were still U.S. manufacture.

Trivia - I believe I read that 50% of the world's supply of furniture-grade cherry comes from within a 50 mile radius of Kane, PA. (Up north to us.) But the best furniture made from this black cherry comes from North Carolina.

Richard,

I have 2 web sites that my wife suggested that you can visit. Both are in the midwest and all of their furniture is made in their own facilities.

The first happens to be right in my own city. I should've thought of them myself, as we have a number of their pieces in our home. They use the old fashioned construction methods of making furniture, even down to using the square nails. Not knowing if this is the style you like, I'd call it country, but not as "new" looking as the Amish stuff is. The store is Schuler's and their web site is www.schulercountry.com. They even sell at the Kane County Flea Market in St. Charles, IL. every month.

The second manufacturer is by Beaver Manufacturing located in Shell Lake, WI.(about halfway between Eau Claire and Minneapolis). They make all of their furniture out of quarter-sawn oak, cherry, or walnut. Their goal is to make furniture today equal to the quality used in furniture making a century ago. (Not my words - I'm quoting from a brochure!) Their website is www.shelllakefurniture.com.

Hope this information helps. If you ever get over this way, you're welcome to come and look at our furniture to get an idea of what it's like. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The Amish folks in PA make some really nice furniture. Don't have any links or anything but bought some from a little store in Tampa , FL a few years ago. Other than That NC is the only other place I personally know of that makes quality furniture over here. I also have some Broyhill furniture that I bought about 10 yrs ago that is nice and was made in US. You will pay more for the US built stuff, but it is of a quality that can be passed on to the grandchildren.
