Been SO interesting to read all the responses here, and I had no idea the thread would generate so much interest. Thanks to everyone who has contributed with either a positive or negative response...I was hoping the thread would better inform those who are considering retirement. Had dinner last night with a former work associate she was the director of a huge social services agency for a decade...I showed her this thread on my Ipad and asked if she had anything to contribute...her response was,

Quote: "My time is my own, and I am so grateful for that..." Unquote. AMEN to that.

JD, I think we have all shied off from trying to advise anybody considering retirement because we are all old enough to know that one man's meat is another man's poison. It would be wrong to give advice.

Some enjoy the plain freedom of it all; some want part-time work; some want to pursue dreams they could not when younger; and some like me (who has "retired" twice from employment) do not want to retire at all. I want to die whilst actively farming my own land - although if it really gets to the push, my son has promsied me he will buy the "right" horse and we will somehow break into Aintree and I will be killed going over one of the famous Grand National steeplechase fences. What a way to go!!

Used to ride competition (rank amateur) motocross back in the early 70's but it still took me a while to realize what you meant...heck, I have been dragging the pegs for 30 years but never realized it until now....

I have not crossed that retirement bridge yet, but in today's world, I could do without the teleconference invite. Today I had eight 1 hour teleconferences scheduled by my many bosses. Gee, where did the day go?

jaotguy, I have never ridden a motorbike. Nor do I intend to do so.

TomSeller, How did we all manage in "the olden days". I see people in supermarkets glued to their mobile phone and discussing the prices of different brands of toilet rolls with their other half. What a waste of time money and effort. Did you achieve anything that you would not have done with a couple of phone calls or emails?

noted and well taken , not everyone's cup of tea . :)

but we both know that things take a lot longer to heal at our age ... ( something to do with wisdom ? )

we both have our loves ( and how we want to leave this world , having fun  )

BTW . Tom , I tossed my "leash and choke chain" when I retired ... now they have to physically find me to have a discussion ... and if they answer a cell phone while talking to me , I walk away .... their time may be important, but what time I have left is also important to me too.;)

Nothing but right. I do not allow people who visit me to use theirs either. I tell them to leave it in their vehicle or switch it off. It is downright rude to interrupt a face to face conversation to answer a machine - especially when the host has no interest in what the caller wants to ramble on about. Taking and sending text messages (which I admit I do not know how to do) is just as bad.

Heh, dont' always recognize some folks these days without a phone in their hand. Used to be tough when they weren't behind the wheel. :D

"Why don't you answer your phone?"

"You called when you were bored. I guess I wasn't ..."

My usual explanation for not answering is that I'm in the second half of a very short life.

That said, iPhone 4 makes a decent answering machine if you don't mind tapping thru' several VMs saying "It's just me. I'll call back later" to hear someone say "It's just me. Call me back."

"Retirement means never having to charge your phone."_tog
_________

"It's not that life is short, but that you have to be dead for so long." ;)

The Mrs. and I stopped keeping up with tech with the I Phone....we went to the flip phone, pay by the minute...We had enough...we have our computers but that's where we drew the line....everywhere we go folks have their phone in their ear....The other day in the Grocery store, I said..." Well good morning to you too " to a woman about my age and she did not even notice me....then I saw the thing sticking in here ear and saw she was still talking ..hands free....Just crazy.....
