... but with them as an example I am thinking some kind of semi retirement might be a better way to go.

Retiring to "nothing" is not a good idea for a slew of reasons. You need "something", a hobby, traveling, volunteering ... maybe even a tractor!

Even with all the projects I have going on... my first thought of being retired would be to take 4 to 6 weeks of total freedom to do what I wanted... which would most likely be to reconnect with distant relatives in Germany and Austria...

If that meant helping the the Haying or taking one to Doctors visits it would be fine by me...

For me there's tractors, motorcycles, my machine shop, & Linux. No time for TV or girls. Wife passed away 34 yrs ago & haven't replaced her. Boy has two degrees & hasn't cost me beer money yet. Someday I'll leave him $omething to remember me by. ;) You can't take it with you, but you can pick who gets what.

I just wanted to say I'm sorry you lost your wife. Sadly, I share that experience with you - having lost my wife about 12 years ago. I have since remarried, about 18 months ago, but will always remember her with love.

To those of you who are married; Don't miss an opportunity to tell her what she means to you. She is a gift from God.

Spending time with my kids, we take walks in woods, fishing, restoring old tractors, cars. didn't get to do that much while I was working.

Quite a few posters have criticised their present or past management. I worked and studied my way from office boy to the most senior management posts over time (Directorships and Deputy/Acting CEO) and with a few exceptionally good managers, I agree with those who criticise.

I think much of the problem lies in the idea (which came about at various times in different countries) that university graduates or those with the requisite professional qualifications can start at middle management level and be rapidly promoted. They have never learned that whilst it is tough at the top (and it is) it one helluva lot tougher at the bottom. How can they know when they have never been at the bottom?

I was often told I was too soft with my staff. Balderdash. Treat people with respect and they will work much better because they know they are valued. It is often not possible for a particular manager to do anything about pay for their staff, but I found that whilst many people would like a pay rise, job satisfaction was also important to them.

Its a shame that in some companies the notion of respect is nonexistent. In the past I worked in two mid sized banks in the southeast and in both cases the management was caught red handed lying to employees. I even had one "manager" tell her underlings not to associate with staff for lunch or anything. One former staff guy who was promoted wouldnt even ride the elevator with his former colleagues because he was told not to. The same manager mentioned above also said in a meeting at one time that, "its not what we get done but what people think we are doing that matters.". Needless to say one bank no longer exist and at the other all of the employees have left, the manager fired and that department shut down. The level of management incompetence and abuse to their employees was unbelievable. I couldn't make the stuff up.

Well, ugh, I enjoy not whining about my boss more. :confused3:

Its not whining, its fact. Not all managers are good managers. That's why I happy to now be self employed for the last 10 years.

I am nearing 12 years of leisure after jumping off the treadmill, and if I had to name one factor that really stands out about retirement, it's the freedom to do what I want, when I want to. I'm taking a TBN break after devoting the past few days spent installing a pair on new Hunter ceiling fans in rooms that formerly had only a light fixture...meaning I had to install braces overhead for a fan box, and one room needed a pair of 3-way switches and wiring installed. It wasn't fun, but being free of the constraints of working Monday-Friday let me take the time to do it at MY convenience and not worry about my job dictating the time I spent on it.

What ONE factor do you retirees enjoy most about your freedom?[/QUOTE]
