Does the 7.3 have hydraulic actuated injectors like the 6.0? I know my 6.0 starts cold, but it has a miss on a few cylinders for the first minute or so. And yes, the cord is just above the front license plate and just to the passenger side of it as well. B.

If your 6.0 is having trouble starting in the cold, chances are it's not the glow plugs. It's the FICM (fuel injection control module). It's a common problem with the 6.0. I have replaced mine twice. I currently have over 214K miles on my 2005 F250. This fall I had I had major top end work done on my 6.0 including replacing several injectors, the oil cooler, and had the turbo cleaned, plus some other work done on the top end of the motor (including EGR delete). The truck runs better than new. And my fuel milage is up about 15%. Well worth the money I spent. I'm hoping to get another 200K miles out of the truck before it rusts out totally.

Speaking of rust, check your oil pans! The Vermont winters did a number on my oil pan and I just POR 15'ed it to get me to Spring when I can replace it.

Stay warm!

The problem with the 6.0 is the injectors. They develop what know as stiction (they get stuck when cold).
There are some oil additive products that most of the time fix the stiction issue. I'm trying Hot Shots right now. they say it takes up to 3000 miles to work. Tractor Supply carries it.

Let us know how the Hot Shots works if you don't mind. I came close to ordering some Rev-X for the same purpose, but I put my block heater on a timer(like you) so it starts and runs perfect.

I just had head studs installed, oil cooler, egr deleted, ficm checked/doctored and custom tunes. Injectors are the last thing I(mainly the wife) want to think about!!

As mentioned IH put block heaters in all the engine's. Ford only put power cords on them if sold in about the 20 Northern most states or if optioned.

You can get the cord on Ebay.

got home too late last night to take a look. will take a look later today., thanks

I've researched the 6.0 on so many forums it isn't funny. The more you read about it, the sicker it makes you feel....if you own one, that is!
For hard starting, you hear everything from low bat., bad ficm, sensors, glow plugs, harnesses, fuel, oil........and your head begins to spin and you wonder what you've gotten yourself into....I try to stay away and let ignorance become bliss!

Nothing like hearing first hand experiences from good ole tractor guys though!

i DO think the bats in this truck are weak.

after charging up and then driving to work and to a job site this am ( 1 hr driving ).. I got back to work and load tested the bats.. and they load test at the lowest end of the marginal area of the acceptable range . IE.. any lower and they would be in fail area. I'm thinking that may well be most of my problem. With glow on, they dip into fail :)

I'm gettingthe bats repalced today as well as getting her oil changed as she's do. If i have my way she's going syn . i had her that way for a year and then the mechanic didn't want to keep doing it.

Don't worry about all of the complaints.
The 6.0 is a good motor....once you bullet proof it, and don't try to make stupid HP.
You already replaced the head studs and oil cooler and EGR delete.
Those are the three main culprits to head gasket failure.
Don't waist your money on a cold air intake, they do more harm than good as far as letting dirt into your motor.

In the spring go ahead perform a cooling system flush.
(Read up on this it's pretty involved, not your standard V-8 flush)
Install a cooling system filter and change over to a "Extended Life Coolant" not the Ford Gold junk.
I use CAT ELC coolant in mine.

If you already don't use synthetic oil it's time to switch to a 5w-40

Of course if I had a catastrophic engine failure I'd be installing a Cummins.
