My Ford 1510 has started spitting/leaking oil out of the exhaust pipe.

It uses over a quart of oil per tank of fuel. I mildly restored this tractor a few months ago. I bought it with a bad injection pump, so it didn稚 run right. Now that it is running I知 finding this oil issue. It is more pronounced when rpm is above 2000, but does smoke at all rpm痴.

The breather hose does have some air coming out, but not much oil. Here is a shot of the hose end.

I知 wondering if this is a valve guide issue or rings. When I went through the tractor I found the oil tube for the rocker arm shaft missing. The rocker arms and guides were without oil for Lord knows how long. The valves were way out of adjustment because of the wear. Something else I found was the #3 cylinder exhaust port completely blocked off with soot/sludge. At the time I chalked it up to valves being out of adjustment. But now I知 thinking maybe the valve guide was wasted letting oil in.

How do I tell where this oil is coming from? Thank you for the help fellas.

Appears to be more than diesel slobber. The oil control rings could be stuck. Long periods of heavy work may clear it up, may not. The joint in the expander spring behind the oil ring needs to be 180 degrees from the end gap of the oil ring. If you have plenty of power, and are not having hard-to-start problems, it shouldn't be a compression issue (worn compression rings).

It starts fine and has pretty good power. When I had the injector pump done the shop put it on the dyno, and it had 16hp at the pto. The manual says 18hp at pto, so it’s not that far off. Has either 960 or 1960 hours on it, can’t tell because the meter only has three places.

When I was restoring it a few months ago I did a compression test and it was North of 300psi on all cylinders.

After doing some research online, I’m wondering if this is slobber. I’ve been collecting firewood the past few weeks. I typically would let the tractor idle at 1400 rpm while loading rounds into the bucket and the 3point carry all. When I would head back to the house with the load I would throttle up to about 2000 rpm. While unloading the rounds I would again throttle down to about 1400 rpm.

This doesn’t explain the oil consumption though.

I did very little light work with my 4410 this winter. I worked his butt off blowing snow. The snow was wet and I could easily pull the engine right down with a John Deere 59 snow blower. The first garden I rototilled I had slobber. I've never had this before so I'm chalking it up to the fact that the winter was so cold. That and I have a vertical exhaust like yours so the slobber can't drain out like it can when the exhaust comes out in front of the front tire.

Does number three cylinder have a poor injector? Just tossing out ideas.

I don't know what kind of oil you are using but try changing to a good synthetic and see if the oil consumption lessens. It worked on my 2001 TDI. The previous owner said about 2 liters/800 km. I'm doing about 1 liter/7000 km. He was using Castrol 5w-50 and I'm using John Deere synthetic 0w-40. Go figure!

I had the injectors rebuilt by Oregon fuel injection. The pump is new also.

I will try the synthetic oil idea and report back. Was thinking of trying a thicker viscosity?

Anyone tried the Lucas oil conditioner?

Let it work real hard, run the engine at max load for a couple of hours. Very unlikely that engine oil can get through a cylinder that are fireing, it should have been a massive blue smoke.

I have a box blade with ripper shanks I can use to grade our mile dirt road. This should put a good load on it. What rpm should I run the engine at while doing this? Max rpm is 3000, do I want it screaming like that for hours while I’m blading?

Top rpm is not needed but work it hard, keep a eye on watertemp and be sure to not go low on engine oil.
