When you say it is running wide open how many rpm's is it turning. Injection pumps are not simple to work on. It takes special tools to calibrate the pump properly. The service manual says the pump is not servicable.(for the average person). My thought is this. Now you have a tractor that runs but not properly.Spend a little money and have a profesional fix the pump and the tractor should last a long time. If you dont get the pump working as it should and it runs wild you will end up with a pile of scrap. Insted of shutting the fuel off to kill the motor remove the tube going from the air flter to the valve cover. If the engine runs wild put somthing over the air intake on the valve cover to shut off the air.

JC, looks like someone went a bit haywire with RTV once upon a time. Trying to get the screws out, the heads just strip. I'm looking at doing what cleaning I can. If that doesn't get me somewhere, I'll take it off and have someone look at it.

I was at my place this am and took a look at the spring return mechanism. It does not appear to be internal to the fuel pump. there is a pivot point on the throttle linkage that has a spring not easily seen. Check to see if you have the spring there. Move the throttle on the pump by hand to see if it spring back. a bungee or some spring with small stiffness might temporarily help.

Funny, I have those same tie downs. Some in black, some in white. Didn't know you could get them in NH blue!

I got the spring mechanism freed up enough to make it work some using the throttle but still only WOT.

I got the ports off the top and cleaned the springs and the area under there. Each has its own "needle valve" like a carbed float would attach to. When I crank the front will shoot fuel 6" or more in the air but the rear does nothing. Even with the needles out, nothing in the rear. Pushing down while cranking you can FEEL the front one bump up and down, not sure if it is pressure or actually physical contact from below. NOTHING on the rear. I'll get that side plate off tomorrow but I did get a bunch of gunk out of the rear seat area. Not sure how they come apart beyond that.

If you look at the exploded view on the CNH parts book, I have 14 and 12 off but I don't see anything on the view that looks like the needles. Now that I've gotten them off once, I can get back to them and take pictures later.

lol, Blue bungee was a special order item and costed me extra:D:D.

#29 is the camshaft with two lobes. Front side of the shaft couples with the drive gear and backside of it to governor assembly. I wonderd if the second lobe moves the second plunger up or down, the one that is not squirting fuel. I think the pulsation of fuel you experience in the front plunger is caused by the action of the front lobe. Did you take our cover 4 ? what did you see behind it?

No cover removal yet. Tried with what I had and not enough grip. Tomorrow when it isn't raining!

Stuck plunger on one side. They run off a cam just like a valve train and one of them is stuck in the "up" position so it isn't allowing any fuel and it doesn't allow any adjustment.

The boy finished high school today, came home and dug into it. He got the cover off and the plunger is good and stuck. Looks just like a stuck valve with the compressed spring and everything. Soaking it in Fluid Film now. Talked to the expert at the dealership today and he said to work at it and if we couldn't get it, take the pump off and bring it in. He recommended for the future to run an additive in the fuel. I'll find out more about it after we sort out the issue at hand. Hope to get some pictures taken of it stuck so you can see what we are dealing with.

Slowly but surely, one bite at a time:) I use power service, 2oz per 5-6 gallons and appears to have solved diesel storage season to season with added benefit of adding a bit more lubricity to low sulfur fuel. Soaking it is a good idea, I might add a bot of heat (a blow drier) of heat gun on low and it might give it enough to loosen up. if the spring is not in it fully compressed position I might try to nudge it with a bit of compressed air.

Soaked the daylights out of her with Fluid Film (expensive but good stuff!) Today I managed to pull part of the plunger out from above. I could see the stuck piece so I got a brass piece and used it as a punch to smack it lightly from above. I took a few light taps and it snapped down where it should be. I got under it with a little pry bar and worked it up and down. She's moving up and down easily and we put it all together. Of course, the battery is dead now so we can't do much further.

At this point, I'm pretty dang happy we got it this far. I think my boy is learning a ton. Not just about diesel engines but also about patience and persistance. In the end, we may need a professional but I really don't have a problem if he's happy with it!
