1982 Ford 1700
Hey guys another newbie here. We have an 1982 Ford 1700 4x4 and I was wondering if there was anything i could do to get alittle more grunt out of the little diesel. Are there any screws i can mess with on the injection pump? Or am i stuck with the 23HP. Id also like to straight pipe it. How does it sound? I dont know why i want to do all this, I just do .

Can't squeeze more blood out of turnip, aye:D Well, if you have creep then use it. Just go with the lowest speed at the rated 2500 rpm to get all the juices out. In order to get more hp and keeping your rig the same can be done only by turbo charging it. Yet to see any hot rod 1700. What is it that you need to do?

By straight piping it, do you mean taking the exhaust out and put a straight piece of pipe instead?

Yeh just replacing the muffler with a straight pipe so its loud and noisy. The only thing we really use the tractor for is bushhoging, the occasional post hole digging, and moving heavy parts around our property. I dont need to do anything to the tractor, I just want to.

Your dealing with something approaching 30 years of age. It's probably dropped a couple hp but there is no magic to make it 30 unless you park a new one under it. Good excuse to update. Thats my story and I stuck to it.

Cant update to a newer tractor and dont really need to, this one is just fine. But I would like to know how to turn the pump up alittle. I know there has to be a fuel screw or somethin. All mechanical injection pumps have somethin you can fiddle with.

Why do you think you need more power? Mine is identical to yours and I have pulled my 70 GMC heavy half up a 30 Deg. hill when it was dead. The tractor pulled it about 1/4 mile up hill, although for safty reasons I did it in reverse so the front end wouldn't flip on me. I hooked the chain to the front bumper of the tractor.
As for the straight pipe, I turned my muffler 90 deg and ran it straight out the back inside the fender. The only draaw back with that is you won't be able to enter or exit from that side. I have pictures and the muffler is still on the pipe. I like it that way because you can go under low hanging limbs without worring about knocking the muffler off.

There used to be an adapter pipe to convert from vertical to horizontal exhaust, below the stepplate. Might still be avaiable.

I dont need more power. I just want more power. Im a car guy. I modify my vehicles to go faster and perform better. So I want to do the same to the tractor. I want the tractor to hold high rpm in high gear up a hill and not bog down. I dont care if it smokes actually i prefer it to smoke. So where is the srew?

If you do play with the pump you will need to update to a newer tractor. Parts for these tractors are expensive. If you hurt the engine the repairs will cost more than the tractor is worth. If you buy a service manual it will show you what you want to know.
