Hi,

I'm looking at acquiring a 1989 Ford 2120 with 3710 hrs on it and has a front end loader. I was hoping that some of the members here could steer me towards some good things to look for to ensure that the tractor is in good running condition and some things to watch out for that are signs of wear and poor maintenance.

Also, were the 2120's a good tractor? From what i've been able to find on the net they seem to have a solid reputation for being reliable. True?

How is the mileage on a tank of fuel with them?

check the pto clutch they are a high dollar part and that tractor has alot of hours on it

Check where the tractor front end bolt to the transmission. They had a tendency to loosen up. I love mine and if it needed some repairs I wouldn't mind sinking some money into it.

Thanks Gentleman,

The guy who is selling it is asking $12,000, I believe that I can get a rear snow plow blade and a brush hog thrown in. What do you think of the price?

That sounds high to me even with the extras. Check Tractorhouse.com for a comparison. I would be concerned about the number of hours also.

that is real high i seen a 4wd 2120 sell at auction without a loader with 1500 hours for 7000 and a 3415 2wd with new loader sell for 5500 and they both where nice tractors

He's movable on the price and I know he wants to get rid of it.

On start up it always picks up within the first couple of seconds and emits a bit of black smoke. I'm just wondering how much black smoke is to much? It burns clean after about a second.

I think i'm going to take the next step and have a professional mechanic take a look at it.

Other ideas?

Remember older diesels don't burn the cleanest, if it starts well and doesn't knock it is probably fine. I have a Ford with 3,600 hours on it. Still runs mint.

i'd say if it ain't smoking.. it's burning pretty clean.. old or new...
