Posting this here instead of ford forum just for fast answers. Got a ford 3000 that I'm trying to find the differential lock. Renters just bought it this weekend and it caught fire but I need to tow it in the shop to work on it (getting paid) but even in neutral and clutch the rear tires are hopping and not disengaging.

Wondering if any of you guys know how to disengage it or at least where the lever is. And tractor is out of service so i can't play with it to try and disengage.

Attached a few pics of the tractor and the levers 1476136697946.jpg1476136710814.jpg1476136725894.jpg1476136740044.jpg1476136755764.jpg

I don't know about the 3000 specifically but on my 3910 it's at the right hand heel. But even if engaged it doesn't keep the wheels from turning. It locks the differential so both wheels turn together. If the tractor is hopping (wheels not turning), perhaps there's more wrong than just the fire damage.

Put the tools down and back away slowly till you know what you are doing!

That is a SOS granny, a powershift trans. The trans and diff are locked down unless running.

There is a traction disconnect that slips the pinion coupler off to let the rear end free wheel when you tow it. Back on the diffy inspection cover is a short strap/lever held with a bolt. Flip it.

Ps, diffy lock wouldn't have prevented the rears from turning..

Is the pto out of gear? While it shouldnt be an issue, it might be a contributing factor.

I side with Ken on this. All the Fords/New Hollands i've been around the lock pedal engages both drive tires for increased traction not to disengage the differential. It sounds like there are more issues at hand as the tractor should roll free with the trans in neutral.
As long as its a stick and not the select-o-shift, pulling the top trans. cover isnt a big deal. One could then look to see if its stuck in a gear/rock the tractor back and forth and observe at the same time.

I'm hazy on this but it seems theres a ball at the bottom of the shift lever(s) that fits into the shift fork for gear selection. perhaps a broken shift fork or shifter? not likely but one never knows. Otherwise its likely theres a problem in the differential.

Some of the older tractors such as our old massey 30 had a disengagement lever on the left side of the trans/differential but I dont believe the 2/3/4000 series fords were set up in this manner.

That lever must been it. Moved it into other position and it rolled easy

Exactly what SoundGuy was talking about.
I love it, 'Put the tools down and back away slowly till you know what you are doing!'
Like he indicated, do not fiddle with the transmission beyond moving the release lever when it comes to resurrecting it from fire.

You are very unfamiliar with a SOS transmission tractor.. pto is independent by pull cable.. it's simply not a crashbox transmission like you are describing.

Sorry, but that picture doesn't show me anything...

the disconnect is on the differential inspection port. not on the transmission. if that's what's in the pic, you are good. I vew the forum on a phone.. so that picture is dark and 2" x 3" :)

I knew it was an SOS just by looking.
