I have a '65 Ford 3000. The books say it has a 47 HP motor and 38 HP PTO. When shopping for implements that use the PTO should I use the lower rating to make sure my tractor is properly suited to the quip?

The lower rating, 38HP, is the spec you use when buying PTO equipment. PTO equipment (bush hogs, tillers, etc) will spec a required HP and the HP they are talking about is the PTO HP. The gross HP is the total HP of the engine, but there is some loss in the drivetrain, so the PTO HP is always lower. Older tractors, such as a 1950 JD B, only spec the PTO HP, but newer ones spec both.
