Hi all, new to forum and tractors, but just picked up a Ford 3000 w/Loader and trying to figure out what year it is. The tractor and loader run great but the 3pt wont work at all. I am having trouble getting numbers off the tractor. The numbers from behind the starter on the block dont make sense, there is a backwards D followed by103301D125, above that is 31023D, above that all I can make out is a 28 and cant make out the rest. We have the lift plate off right now and everything looks to be fine, so we are going to replace filters,o-rings, and gaskets on lift and see if it helps. We are not sure if pump works but it feels and sounds like it does, although hyd. oil looks fairly dark and somewhat dirty. We are looking to get an operating manual and they seem to cover differant years, we already have the IT manual. Sorry for the long post, and thanks if somebody can shine some lite on our problems. Thanks David

The backwards D is a C, followed by 110330. This is the Serial No C110330. The C prefix means it was assembled in the US. The 1D125 is the date code where 1 is the 1st year of the decade (which would have to be 1971 since the model didn't exist in 1961), the D is April, 12 is the 12th. The next character is the shift and should be a B for day shift. The 31023D is the model number: 3=power class, 10=chassis type (all purpose), 2=fuel type (diesel), 3=PTO type, D=Transmission type. I forget these last two.

There's a problem... if this is a post 4/68 machine, the model ID code won't be '3' for the 3000.. but rather 'C'

A 31023D model ID number would indicate a 65- 3/68 machine.. not a 71.. so the numbers don't jive..

To the original poster.. only give us the numbers from the bellhousing.. not the block as you mentioned.

Soundguy, sorry for the confusion, the numbers are from the bellhousing rite in front of the starter. The bottom number is what is confusing us as it is deffenantly a backwards D followed by 103301D125. Do you know where to find an operting manual in pdf. form on the net. Thanks for the help, David

No manual in pdf format .

Now.. are we sure this is a 3000.. could it perhaps be a 4000 or 4000SU.. the D would indicate a 4000 series unit.

If it was a 4000 SU ( super utility ).. it may even look like a 3000 front axle with the swept back axle and radius rods.

the telltale sign will be the brakes and rear axles... if the rear axles have no gear reduction areas where the trumpets attach to the center section.. and the brakes are outboard.. it is a 3000 .. if the brakes are wet, and there are bulges at the center section where the axle trumpets are.. it's a 4000.

post some pics.

Finally got some pics, looks a little rough but the motor and loader run great. We have the lift off and ordered gasket and o-ring kit, o-rings are shot, but everything else looks good. Thanks for all the help, David

Deffinately a light duty front axle like an ag machine.. and outboard breaks.. so not a 4000su.. and not something like a 3400/3500 industrial.

My guess is the backwards d is really a backwards C.. and then that makes it all fit, as a 'c' meanse 4-68+.. and that jives with the 71 model year in the date code.

On fords we frequently see backwards stampings.. and letters used as numbers.. I and 1 seem to be their favorite swap as well a b and 6.

Soundguy, do you know what year they started using 2 breathers, as this one has one on top and one on side. We also have some work to do on power steering as it leaks around the steering box. Wondering what it is worth, as we picked it up for $400.00. Thanks again, David

Looking at the sheet metal my guess is the serial number is C110330 making it a 1965 model. It's definitely a 3000 ag model with what appears to be a Ford 730 industrial loader installed. Be careful that front axle wasn't designed to handle the weight that loader can lift. The D125 may be part of a date code I'm not sure. You can buy the service manual in CD form or book form for $20 -$30 and operators manual for $30 - $35 on ebay you will want both. For $400 you stole it.

There should only be one breather on the tractor.. and IMHO.. it is oil bath... post a pic of your '2nd' breather. I don't think the dry filter breathers hit till the X600 series... but then.. I have much less experience with the 65+ models.

If you look at pic of tractor I posted you will see it right below the muffler on the side. the one on top and side meet up at a canister that runs to carb. The #s from the lift plate seem to put its man. date at 73,Jan. 29 Day shift, 3A29B. Thanks, David

David,

You may have a tractor that's had major components swapped out over the years. I agree the date code on the lift plate is from '73. All of the major components will have a date code cast into them. It would be interesting to see what the others are.

I can answer you breather question. The second one below the muffler is not a breather but the filter housing. The gas tractors use a paper element while the deisels use an oil bath as soundguy says.

This leads to another question. I thought someone decoded the number off the trans as a deisel in an earlier post. If it's a gas and they decoded the model number correctly this is more evidence that some parts have been swapped out. You may even have a "mutt" which is a tractor assembled from one or more donor tractors. Nothing wrong with that especially for what you have invested. You could double your money just by selling the loader.

Put the lift plate back on and primed the pump and now the 3-pt works, now all we have to do is fix the seals in the power steering. getting it back together slowly but surely. thanks for all the help

Glad to hear it.

In general. "I" was not used to avoid the confusion with "1" in date codes.

Castings are not too bad.. it's the stampings that get funky with the mixed set of stamps..
