full field and jumper cutout.

post back
I'm sorry but lucas wiring systems are like alchemy to me....please explain what to connect and where to do the test

the genny has a small blade field connection and a larger stud armature.

to motor test the genny, slip belt off and jumper bat hot to armature, and to field. gen should spin.

if it spins, it should charge ( rarely you can have a field fault and get a weak spin and no charge ).

to full field, hook belt back up, start machine and jumper bat hot to field. check armatue and bat hot for voltage. should both be right at same potential... ie.. with engine revved 13.8-14+ volts.

if armature is high and or jumpy.. but battery is a flat 12.6, then jumper bat hot to armature and field and recheck.

if voltage from bat hot to ground is 13.8+ then she should be charging... but looks like a wireing problem.. or the vreg has stuck open cutout contacts or open shunt coil.

Unfortunately my father has disappeared in the 4x4 with my tools in it....voltage from earth to D on regulator (arm I think) is 13.5 v
Earth to F on reg (field?) is 6 but jumping up and down...can't do motor test until I get tools

forget doing a voltage test on the field. it's useles.

you can skip the motor test and go to full field test just using wire from bat hot to field.. just unplug field spade and slip the jumper on

Getting dark here...when I connect a wire from field on gen to bat hot, there is a big spark and it puts voltage at bat (+ve to -ve) down from 12.7v to 12.4 v

Do you mean check potential difference (voltage) between F on Gen and Bat +ve?

   / Ford 4000 charging problems #17
no. forget about doing any kind of voltage checks that include anything to do with the FIELD>

it is USELESS.

and YES. if you jump bat hot to field there WILL be current flow and a spark.

now. with machine running and bat hot jumped to field on generator, vreg field wire unplugged at generator, what does batter voltage do as you throttle up?

Ok..jumper between F on generator and bat +ve with F spade disconnected caused voltage across battery to jump to 15.5 - 16 v....
noticed then that red ignition light was on bright even when jumper removed... gave tractor full rev and light went out and now steady 13.5 at battery...Light no longer coming on when tractor revved...something stuck in new regulator?

It has rained here every day for a month and the house the tractor is in is an open ended shed thus very damp...

BTW, sorry for being so clueless
