I need to figure out how to remove the top of the instrument cluster on my Ford 535. When I went to pull the choke out to kill the engine, it was very hard to pull. It has been getting harder lately. When I pulled it out this time it stayed out and will not push in. In trying to push it in, the knob broke also. I need to remove the top metal part of the instrument cluster so I can take a look at the choke and see why it is sticking and/or replace it. I can't seem to figure out how it comes off.

Here is a pic of the tractor. Good old girl. A mean machine.

Here is a shot of the front of the cover of the instrument panel just behind the battery compartment. I can see the bolts there and I assume these need to come off also.

Anybody know how to take that hood off so I can get to the choke?

Backhoe problem - jerking a lot.
BTW, when using the BH, it wants to jerk a awful lot when I swing the hoe left or right or up or down. Curling the bucket is smooth. It acts like its low on fluid but that is not the case. Could the electrical relays that control the hydraulics be going bad?

I believe that your tractor is a diesel and that you are facing up to the fuel shut-off control cable assembly. You will be removing and replacing it to where it connects to the fuel injection pump. Those things had a habit of becoming inoperative due to wear particles building up and restricting movement.

You might remove the instrument cluster by removing the screw from each corner and pulling the cluster outward to afford some access to the back of the rear cowl assembly. Then the rear cowl is held in place by the bolts you see in your picture, a fastener on each side of the bottom rear of the cowl, and perhaps at the top rear of the tank (you can see that area once the instrument cluster is removed). Actually you only need to move the rear cowl enough to get a hand in to release the fuel shut-off cable. The rest of it become pretty apparent.

In installing the new shut-off cable, you will need to adjust the cable at the forward clamp to ensure that the fuel shut-off on the plump does shut off the flow of fuel to stop the engine, but yet allows the shut-off to return to the full open position. This is really not so overly critical.

Good luck, and save your knuckles.

Thanks Opti-Mist.

The fuel shut off (diesel) works OK. Just the cable is frozen. I unhooked the cable at the shut-off connection so I can manually work the shut-off to start and stop the engine.

I need to pull the instrument cover off so I can get to the metal cable itself and see what's binding behind the pull knob. I think that if I remove those bolts in the picture, the cover will start to come off but there is probably more to it.

Catman1,
Have you tried spraying the metal cable with WD40 or equivalent? Spray as much as you can get to, and let it set for a day. If you can get it moving after spraying, keep working it, and keep saturating it with lube. Might save you taking of the hood. Just a thought.

Good thought dapper, but I did not get a chance to do that. When I pulled out the choke, it came off in my hand. Too many pulls over the years I guess. I put the shaft back in the hole and tried to push the choke back in, but it would not push in. Surgery is required.

I would have to agree with Opti-Mist. It looks like a diesel and that would make it a "engine shut off" and not a "choke". Diesel engines do not have choke's as they do not have a carb. This cable shuts off the flow of fuel to the injection system thereby starving the engine of fuel and it shuts off.

Trust me on this, you will have to replace the cable. It is essentially a wire within a sheath and there really is no way of disassebling or cleaning it.

Thanks guys.

You are right. It is a shut-off. I don't know why I thought it was a choke. I am just leaning diesel engines. I will order a cable and replace the cable as soon as I figure out getting the cowling off.
