Ford 555 3cyl diesel acting up

It will start fine cold but after warming up it will not restart without a shot of either. Runs fine until I shut it off and then then it just turns over trying to restart.

Any help much appreciated.

A lot. It’s an 83 that has far outlived the hour meter.

Never use starting fluid on any diesel is my only comment.

Also the most common reason of the difficult diesel engine warm start - wear-out of the plunger and barrel of the fuel pump. If plunger and barrel are worn out - cold fuel can be transported; however, as soon as the fuel warms up - it becomes more watery and cannot be transported by plunger and barrel easily.

Check the compression. It should be above 325-350 psig as a minimum.

Other details to help online diagnostics is does it smoke and what color smoke? I suspect low compression too!

Since starting fluid gets it going when warm that tells you timing and compression is good enough...but it also tells you fuel isnt there.

The 555 runs a CAV/Delphi injection pump.. they’ll run + or - a bucket of dirt.. but once the head and rotor goes bad, it’s bad.
Next time u go to start it, loosen the bleeder screw by the name plate FIRST..(5/16)
Loosen the screw, crank the engine till it shoots fuel and NO AIR.. tighten the screw, pull the throttle to wide open and see if it’ll start..
I’m not sure weather or not that 555 has a “flame thrower” in the intake.??
If it does, it’ll be screwed into the aluminum intake manifold right where the rubber boot ends..
If it does have one, do a search for “thermo-start”
for operating instructions..
