You're missing the point. The purpose of the flow meter is to measure the output flow at rated pressure, not just free flowing fluid into a bucket. Most any pump can fill a bucket.

Adding more oil is to see if that will keep the pump primed on a hill to possibly trouble shoot the pickup tube, not the condition of the pump.

Could I not say the same to you? Low flow would not give no flow when on a hill but poor pickup might?

I mean that tongue and cheek as I appreciate one still needs good flow at load to operate any hydraulic system correctly.

I dont have nor can I get access to a flow meter so it will have to wait but will try to source one so we can test it.

I really do appreciate your input and am learning alot here.

Not exactly a true flow meter, but if you use the "hose into a bucket" method with some sort of an orifice (or a nearly closed valve), it will give you a pretty good indication of flow under pressure.

It will also spray a lot oil under pressure all over the place. If that's your idea a "homeowner" test, then go for it, but I wouldn't be suggesting it to some unsuspecting individual.
