OK guys, let's kick the tires on this 801 SOS. I have been warned about these trannies, but the tractor looks so "straight", I can't help but being interested. It was owned by the girls grandfather and as far as I know, he used it for brush hogging. Current standing sales offer .. $2500
What do y'all think?

drive it in all 10 forward gears and both reverses. drive it both cold and hot.

is it the older ORC clutch with hashed out overrunning ranges on the selector, or the updated DDC. DDC is more preferred.

I haven't even seen it, "up close and personal", yet. I'm going to try to get together with her and have a look/drive and see what it really looks like. I'll try to get some of the "real particulars", as you mention.

otherwise, the usual stuff. check steering, tires, tin, etc. 2500$ depending on area, is prime money for one. then again, in some areas any small ford is worth that much or more.

Arthur's Tractors .... This makes me feel a little better about the SOS transmission, as they are about 4 hours from me. But it doesn't guarantee, the repairs will be cheap.Then again, the transmission may work flawlessly for years. :confused:

I'm not familiar with the sos trannies, but that tractor looks to have been taken really good care of. Not left out in the rain either. First thing I'd get rid of is the extra grill. I'm sure it's practical but just kills the looks of a fine looking tractor. I like the older fords and have a 841 and 851 I keep different attachments on. Those old fords are bullit proof

If he mows around sticks, that extra grill may save a 250$ radiator and 50$ fan!

Yeah, I don't like the bumper, but it may have saved some expensive tin. I think, the typical red bumpers are acceptable. :) Also, just mowing hay, takes it's toll on the lower grill/paint.

My guess, he tangled with a tree stump.
One of mine has a funky grill. I guess the gate in the front t would have saved the original

At $2,500, I'd buy that one sight unseen (assuming it operates as expected) even with the repaint, 12V conversion, and cobbled up PS hose(s).

Offer the seller $2,000, but buy it at $2,500 if they decline your offer.

If you do not buy it, tell me where it is. If it is not too far away, I will or friends of mine will.

It's in PA. Do you think, it's been repainted? I'd say not, unless I'm missing something.

She has been a a little hard to get together with, but I still plan on looking.

Yes, it has been repainted, but few tractors of similar vintage have not been.

The headlamps and, obviously, seat are not OEM but the tractor "looks" good otherwise. It also looks to have been owned by someone familiar with these tractors. Note the hose clamp on the lower radiator hose to protect the hose from abrasion by the PS belt when a non OEM design lower radiator hose is used.

That said: Where is the battery? Cobbled up 12V conversion?

Look on the side of the transmission, just about where you'd put your foot to get on the foot rest to get up and into the seat. The left side (sitting in the seat) has 2 rather large slotted studs with locking nuts and the right side has 1. These are the band adjustment screws. If the tranny slips and won't pull, you tighten the bands by tightening these screws....directions are in the service manuals, including the cheap ones on the racks at your Ford NH dealer.

If you can't see any of the studs threads protruding out beyond the lock nuts it means that the bands are worn down and "any day now" you won't be able to correct for slipping and a complete tear down would be required.

Around here there was one guy that could fix em and he died about 20 years ago. Since then it's been catch as catch can. I had a 4000 and had to put an engine in front of it. The 10 gears and independent PTO were nice as compared to 4 speed gear shifters with transmission PTO, but every day I had it I just held my breath that it would stay together......it did and the guy I gave it to still uses it to mow.
