Tractor
Ford 9n
I am new to this tractor. It has 12v conversion already. Having issue with the starter switch not getting enough power to turn over the starter. What concerns me is it worked fine up until I cleaned the carb and replaced the gov. Now not working...
Followed 12 9n wire diagram and got my test lite out. Put test light on terminal the started hooks to and give faint light. Any suggestions

Do you have a 12volt battery? Its really easy burn up a 6volt starter if you are cranking with 12 volts. Short across the solenoid eliminating start circuit. and see if it will start.

Yes 12 volt, I tried to jump between the two post on starter switch and melted my screw driver. Put a test light on right terminal of starter switch and tried to start...very dim.

I hope you understood my post, solenoid is on top of the starter and switch is on dash. I meant the 2 big terminals on the solenoid.

I don’t have solenoid on top of starter the 8n does. I have a battery terminal to one post of starter switch and one post goes to starter. When I push the start button by shifter (in neutral) nothing happens. Changed starter switch out. What is crazy is tractor started fine, I change gov and carb ou and nothing.

Sounds to me that when you did the changes something was left un hooked or was shorted out. Check your wiring as best as you can. With the 6 to 12 volt conversion the wiring looks kind of iffy.

Ordered new starter, single wire alt, new wiring harness, plugs, plug wires, 12v coil, starter switch, gauges, and resistance block, i hope something clicks to make it work. Funny question can the push button be bad or is it more likely start switch?

That is two separate circuits.

Should go like so.

Starter push button
Positive of battery >starter switch on trans >starter. Good ground on negative side. Is the negative battery cable loose at either end?
A loose or missing ground cable could cause the dim light along with a weak battery.

The on switch on the dash carry’s power from the positive battery terminal to the alternator and distributor.

The later 9n had a neutral interlock. Yes that switch can go bad.

Starter cranks but engine doesn’t start? Check dash on/off switch circuit.

Starter will not spin engine?
Check neutral and battery Voltage. and large cables both positive and negative at both ends.
