It used to be you could get the d466t and the t444e as well as the powerstroke (or current IH truck motor for the ford labeled as the PS).

Nope. The DT360, DT466, DT530 or DT/HT570 or even the much maligned 9.0L were never available in Ford medium or heavy duties at any time.

From the IH family, only the 7.3L/T444E or the newer 6L V-8's were.

FWIW, ford even used Detroit (GM owned) 8.2L "fuel pincher" diesels (junk) along with allison transmissions. So in some cases, you could get a Ford medium duty truck with a GM owned diesel and transmission in it! Those were Ford's lowest years, IMO.

Ford did build 2 half decent M/D diesels, the 6.6L & 7.8L new Holland diesels from ~86-~'94. They also used CAT3208's in the 80's, Cummins 8.3 & 5.9L's in the 90's..

Cat and Ford used to be pretty close. The 3208 was developed for the Ford L series medium duties. My uncle knows a man that bought a 79-80ish (not sure)
Ford pickup with a Cat 4 cyl in it. Claims it was some sort of factory test mule cast off. Still driving it so it musta been a pretty good engine.

I'd give a Cat a shot even though I'm completely satisfed with my 7.3 IH.
A coworker test drove a 6.4 recently, Said it was a hot rod.

I will give you $100 if you can get your uncle's friend to get me a photo of this truck with the CAT diesel in it. I'm not saying I don't believe you, but this truck has been quite the subject in truck lore for almost 25 years. Some say it really was true, some say it's just an urban myth. Anyway, get me a photo and I'll mail you a money order. I'm dying to once & for all prove or disprove the Ford pickup with CAT diesel story once & for all!

Just FYI, here's the option list for the 650-750. The Cummins, Cat , and Navistar were the options last year.

True for last year, but you'll no longer see the Powerstroke option for this year. The "base" engine will be the 6.7L Cummins until further notice.

I'll see what I can do...

Thanks! I'm not doubting you. I just want to see a photo of the factory installed CAT diesel in the Ford pickup to prove that a CAT diesel WAS offered as an option. There's a huge debate over whether or not this was true. It's one of those "urban myth" debates that's been raging for years.

Sure glad that I only have 84k miles on my '02 7.3l PSD..... got another 216 thousand to go I hope :)

The 6.9's and 7.3's have an awsome track record for reliability. A bit less torque, but plenty of pulling power indeed.

I got you beat. My 03 F350 dually 4x4 Crew Cab has 66K on the clock. I got the last of the 7.3's in my truck and could not be happier. Running an 80 HP program she doesn't know that my 30' fifth wheel camper is behind her. I'm 47 and won't trade her until I retire Lord willing.

I can top that too - I've got an 02 crew cab with the 7.3 and only 54000 miles. After the problems that I had with my 04 6.0,(that I just got rid of), I don't think that I will be parting with my 02 anytime soon!
