Ford f250 5.4

I have a 2000 f250 and I use air bags and weight distribution hitch, it made a lot of difference, feels more stable and don't sag at all.

I'm still driving my '99 SuperDuty 250, XL, 4.10 , 5.4. It's been quite reliable and tows 8M well enough on flat ground. If in mountainous area, I'd want a V-10. MPG about the same (10-14) regardless of load. No plug splitting or spitting but have read quite a bit about it. I do the maintenance. But Hey, this old guy has a light foot.

I tried out a beautiful 2010 F350 ECSB 4x4. It was that really nice burnt orange metallic color. Probably the prettiest truck I've ever seen. I passed on it because the 5.4 just didn't have the power on a grade that I expected. But after trying out the rest of the offerings, found that its the weight of the truck, not the power that makes them a little doggy. What do you expect from a 8000 lbs truck (empty)?

I think the gas trucks are all good. And good for you fining a 6 speed stick! They are like hens teeth around here.

I do feel that the Ford auto tranny's are often bashed, but I can't find anyone who has had transmission problems. We've had a few and beat the poop out of them with no problems, including a diesel dump truck that plowed snow with the infamous 4R100 without a lick of problems. That truck replaced a GMC that we replaced the TH400 in it NINE times!

Looks like you've already pulled the trigger. Good luck with your new rig. If it helps any, I have a 2010 F150 with the 5.4 and 3.55 rear end and tow 5K-6K occassionaly and 8K ish once. Get mid 17s in mixed driving and 19 on the highway. Never pulled an mpg when just towing so I can't comment on how low it drops.

I find the power to be fine for what I use it for. I'm sure it was improved powerwise over the years. In fact, I'm hoping it was about perfected in 2010 since that was the last year it was offered in the F series line (as far as I know). LOL

Well congrats then...you just found one. Five 4R100 rebuilds in my '99 (7.3), two of them replacements from Ford. I finally found a guy locally that has them figured out. No problems with the trans for the last five years. When I sold my wife's F150 with the 5.4 dog of a motor, the 4R100 in it was starting to get a little iffy as well.

Ouch! Five times?

Well maybe I exaggerated a bit. But we beat the bag out of that 95 F350 and it just kept going. That truck was always overloaded, plowed (pushed a 9 ft plow) and sanded, and had multiple drivers who treated it terribly. Oh - maintenance was also kinda poor (I was the only one to do anything to that truck). So I guess my personal experience is not typical.

Was your wifes truck a 02-03 Harley addition? Must have been because the only other half ton with a 4r100 in it and a 5.4 was a lightning and that was far from a dog. As you found out when somebody knows what they are doing the trans is a good unit. The converter was the cause of most of the diesel problems. Other than my 01 7.3 we have only had 1 4r100 failure and the driver literally burned the trans up when he smashed one of the cooler lines when he went into the ditch, them drove it 100+ miles home. It didn't make it and he was/is a moron. My 7.3 tore the converter out, [I am sure the extra 100hp and 200+ft lbs I added didn't have anything to do with it!] But BTS built me a trans that has been flawless for 5+ years. CJ

Some of the older 5.4 f-150s had the 4R100.

Most of 4r100 issues was the 2nd gear diode issues in the transition from e40d. Also torque converter and front pump seals. these issues were put to bed long ago. 4r100 and the e40d are both still great transmissions.
