A friend who is retired asked me my thoughts on the Ford Maverick as he would like a not so big truck for fishing but still room for 4 adults…

I said let me post on the Tractor site as I don’t know much about new vehicles…

The hybrid looks interesting but in Canada they aren't rated for towing anything.

I suggest he look at the GMC Sierra 1500 with the DuraMax 3.0 diesel. I looked at the Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, Chevy Colorado, and of course all the 1500's and F150's.

I settled on the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4. My reasons for choosing this truck included:
1. Excellent fuel mileage. I get around 27-30mpg
2. Highest towing capacity of a 1/2 ton. (13,200lbs)
3. Cost for a diesel engine was $1000 LESS than a gas engine.
4. My dealer gave $5500 off the MSRP and there was a $2750 factory rebate
5. More interior room than the small and mid-size trucks.

So far, I am very happy with it. I have about 3500 miles on it so far. One thing to note is that a friend recently bought a Sierra 1500 SLT with a gas engine, and the dealer gave $11,000 off the MSRP. This was a different dealer than where I bought mine.

Also, my total cost including almost 10% sales tax was around $70,000. My friend got his for a total cost of about $55,000

I'd suggest he and his 4 friends go test drive one to see how they all fit in it.

But what does it have for a transmission? If it's the same as what's behind their gas engines it's only good for 130k miles of light duty work.

Getting back to the Ford Maverick, the direct competition is the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The Maverick is made in Mexico and the Santa Cruz is made in Montgomery Alabama. They each are unique and have their pluses depending what your priorities are. There are many head to head comparisons online:

He likes the size with 4 door cab and main concern is reliability as the plan is his last vehicle purchase…

It does seem among those I know with expensive newer full size trucks that drive a lot transmissions are expensive issues.

I'd be more interested in the gas version than buying the electric version because those batteries could be expensive to replace if even available 10 or so years from now.

I asked my Ford dealer if he could get the low price version Ford advertises. He said Ford never seems to give them any allotment of those...only the higher priced ones.

It was the same way when they allowed people to order them. Every year when they started taking orders, the quota for the lower end Mavericks were filled within weeks. Someday an entrepeneur will realize that people really don't want to spend stupid amounts on features they don't need. Henry Ford is rolling in his grave.

Tell him to at least look at the Tacoma Hybrid. $46k MSRP.
