Ford to introduce another pickup, smaller than the new Ranger.

That engine was the Ford Europe 2.3 originally seen in the US in the pinto. The later dualspark head was used in the Ranger and Mustang.

The 5-speed manual, on the other hand, was from Mazda and used in the Ranger and F-150.

I loved the 2.3/5-speed in my 96. The 2.8 in my 85 was fun, but fussy (had the intermittent distributor ignition module problem, and the carb iced over on humid days until I bolted the intake heat riser flap in the air cleaner housing shut to always add heat). When the exhaust donut burned out (about once a year until I gave up and swapped out the flex fitting for just a straight repair piece) it was downright peppy, good enough to make driving on 128 fun.

The 2.3 16 valve four ? And the 2.8 Cologne pushrod V6 with three exhaust ports ?

The Cologne V6 was built in 2.0, 2.3, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8, 2.9, 3.0 and 4.0 liter, the 4.0 being a North America exclusive, and the smaller V6 all had two exhaust ports per bank, so they fitted in the Taunus engine bay where normally the V4 was fitted. I think only the 2.4, 2.6, 2.9 and 4.0 had three exhaust ports.

The 2.3 16 valve put out 150hp, about the same as any standard Ford pushrod version of the Cologne V6 did...
