And yeas, the head is definitely off the tractor. It seems to have two cracks. One on each of two of the three cylinders. Sounds a bit complex doesn't it.

Any close up pics mate?

Bit difficult to get an image that will show the cracks. They appear to run between the narrowest section of the casting between two of the cylinders. Have left the thing with a specialist welder for another opinion. Fingers crossed. Will post progress.
Would be a shame, but I may have no alternative other than to wreck the tractor. A great source of parts for someone who has a 1710.

Progress of sorts, on both tractor projects.
Wengers can supply a "reconditioned takeout" head but the cost to get it to me is around $2000. Allowing for another $1000 to reassemble and fit, it looks as though the tractor will be a wrecking proposition.
If anyone needs top quality parts, or a complete (with damaged head) tractor, let me know.
I am still holding out some hope for my local welding specialist to weave his magic, although hopes are fading fast.
As far as the 1720 goes, I can spin the PTO freely in both directions with the motor off, clutch disengaged and regardless of where the PTO control lever is placed. Seems like a problem in the diff which means splitting the tractor I guess.
Maybe it's time I ditched the projects and bought a functional machine. Anyone need a going 1720 which has seen better days?

I knew Wenger would have something to offer but the cost is prohibitive by the time getting all the gasket kit and what not to make a complete repair.

On 1720 it does not sound real good with some caution thrown in. Your pto shaft is turning freely due to damage pipe spline to flywheel (unlikely), maladjustment of the pto clutch(somewhat likely), damages sliding gear to engage pto shaft to final pto shaft and lastly damaged pto one way clutch (likely). it might be time to part it out but you can remove the lift cover from the diffy and test most of it from there. The adjustment can be done without a split but clutch plate/inspection requires a split.

Many thanks JC for your continuing advice. Will definitely lift the coverplate, if only to satisfy my curiosity. Will see where that leads me.
Pity the engine from the 1720 won't go into the 1710. Very inconsiderate of Shiaura to make two such different beasties.

I remember when I was over there and had to order a battery charger for a Taylor dunn cart. By the time it was shipped and the currency exchange the charger was 1200.00:shocked: And it took 8 weeks to come in! That's why there's lots of Japanese heavy equipment over there. Cheaper to import and easier to get parts for.

Good luck sussing it out.
Cheers!

Ask your welder if he can do powder spray. Stoody and Victor sell powder spray torch kits for repairing cast. This uses an oxy acetylene torch to heat the part and sprays metal powder to repair the cast. I have talked to several machine shops that use this process frequently with no issues. You can buy a kit for around $500 US.
I don't know if your 1720 PTO is the same as my on 1900. If it is you can remove the over running clutch without splitting the tractor. Do you have a service manual.
