Exactly. I had a 06 F250 w/ the 6.0 diesel. The heaviest thing on my farm is my 1968 4020 JD at around 10k lbs but I have no trailer to put it on. The next is my 05 5103 JD w/ rear tires filled weighs just over 5k. We then have a 3 horse hitch pull aluminum horse trailer empty at 3200lbs. Add 3 horses and we are about 6k lbs. We sat down, put pen to paper, and realized we could cut our note by 100 bucks by going with a half ton and cut out fuel costs in 1/3. I traded the ford and got the best deal on a 2011 silverado Z71, 5.3 w/ 3.42 gears, 9500lb towing capacity. It will handle my small tractor and horse trailer fine. We loved the F250, 0 problems, we are just practical (read tight!) people and couldn't justify the expense of the 3/4 ton. We only tow maybe 3-4 times a year.

I am with you. I have a 04 F-250 Diesel, zero issues, but it cost to keep it around. I am sure in the next year it will be replace by the new F-150 sporting the 3.5L twin turbo. I will still have my F-350 for the big jobs.

Is a "1/2 ton" that can pull 10,000 lbs or more really a "1/2 ton" anymore? To me, it's the full-size 1/2 ton that's pointless, unless all you put in the back are cartons of potato chips or ping pong balls.

Shouldn't a vehicle, the physical size of a full-size pickup, and as fuel thirsty, be able to carry a payload greater than 1000 lbs? If it can, why is it still called a "1/2 ton" then? :confused:

With a 10,000 lb towing capacity, pulling a GN for example that is close to the weight limit, wouldn't the weight on hitch exceed the payload rating of a "1/2 ton"? No way would a 1/2 ton handle the pin weight of my Sooner 3 horse with LQ, even though the trailer is only about 7000 lbs. It'll make a 1 ton squat.

I just had a fun thought, how about putting the TT V6 in the crown vics for the cops or in a mustang or lightning type of vehicle? Keep it looking mild, sleeper if you know what I mean. I bet it would fly. Kind of make think of the Buick Grand Nationals in the 80s. Got my butt kicked by one in a race once.

The last 4 or 5 1/2 tons I have owned had closer to 2,000# payload capacity while the Ford 1 Ton had about 4,000# and the GM 1 ton had about 2,500#.

I prefer a 1/2 ton for 95% of the stuff I do. I do not even bother getting out my 1 ton until the trailer is pushing 10,000#.

If you 7,000# Horse trailer is squatting a 1 ton you need a tougher truck or the trailer is built improperly. it should have no more than 20% of the weight on the Pin or about 1,400#

That would be fun. The best sleeper I can remember in the last 20 years was the Taurus SHO with the Yamaha engine in them. Man, they would fly. Killed us in a Camaro one time.

I bowed out of competitive drag racing when they made the jump to big displacement turbo motrs. I just could not afford to keep up. We have a buddy with a TT vette, holy cow. It runs 9.20, can easily hit 200mph and looks like a stock vette. Talk about a sleeper. Some kid pulled alongside him one night on the interstate at about 75mp on a Hyabusa. We waxed him good, shutting it down at around 150. Dangerous, yes but we were rather stupid back then. I have never ridden in a faster factory looking car. It is an 03 model. Sorry, a little off topic. I am back on track now!!

I do not like GN in 1/2 or really in 3/4 ton trucks. They seem to squat too much, just doesn't look right or safe.

The twin hydraulic landing gear on my 3-horse slant would be your first clue that it is no lightweight! Built improperly though? I think not.:D

Why do the put the axles so far back? Moving them forward 3' or maybe even less would solve all the issues.
