I've seen rental gensets wetstack but they have thousands of hours on them. how long does it take for an air cooled to wetstack?

As little as a few minutes depending on the oil viscosity, engine wear, air temperature and engine load.

What's the procedure to clean out that crud, assuming the load isn't heavy enough to burn it clean? Are fuel additives any use? Anything else?

A high detergent oil and run some biodiesel with soybean oil. Run the unit to the max for a couple of hours.

Is the risk for wet stacking reduced by using synthetic oil?

The problem is incomplete combustion and low stack temperature due to the engine being lightly loaded.
For odd jobs and putting around a gasser is the superior engine. For long hard operation at full power, the diesel is the preferred choice.

Wanted to post this in the AIR COOLED "CLONE" message.......
Fellas, I researched and asked many questions and read all sorts of reviews about the Chinese Clone Generators before I finally bought the Aurora "Open
Frame" Diesel 3 years ago. One of the main things that I looked for was a WARRANTY. I watched the video (pretty impressive) and even called their sales group in Canada. Smooth talking guy who was "very concerned" that I intended to use it on land where there is no electricity. (in other words as my primary source) Not to worry, I intended to add SOLAR. I did, in fact, add solar and use it for 99% of my needs. As such I have only fired up this noisy generator for 10 minutes at a time to run a bench grinder or air compressor etc. After 3 YEARS it only has 16 hours on it. Last week it shut itself down....I restarted and it ran 20 seconds and it shut down again. I called a friend who told me that they typically have an "oil pressure sensor" so we disconnected it and it ran fine. That evening I drained the oil, pulled the oil screen (very little metal) and refilled with new oil. Still shut itself down after about 15 seconds??? We disconnected the sensor again so we could do some work (figured that the sensor was "stopped up"). After about an hour the unit started SLOWING down, KNOCKING LOUDLY and I shut it down.
I called the distributor (in CANADA) to ask what might be causing this and WHERE an "authorized dealer" might be located for repair.
Rather than answer any of my questions, he asked WHEN was the last time that I had changed the OIL. I replied that I had JUST changed it for the first time.
He replied that oil has to be changed every THREE MONTHS whether it was run or not......or the warranty is VOID. Same question about the FUEL filter....WHAT? NEVER CHANGED???? VOIDS THE WARRANTY. The PISTON RINGS are even supposed to be changed EVERY YEAR.......or the warranty is void. BTW, they have NO "authorized dealer repair"....their procedure is to TALK you thru issues and mail you parts IF you have kept up with their requirements and exceptions. GOOD LUCK with that...!!!

What a crock of EXCREMENT!!!!!! These little "exceptions" and requirements are not disclosed BEFORE you send in a check for $1300.
So.....here I am angry, feelin' foolish and NO GENERATOR.

I have taken it to the local John Deere dealer where they work on Yanmar's and hope they can get this thing running. GRRRRRRR

See this old thread:

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...ns/227665-aurora-silent-diesel-generator.html. '90Cummins' had a similar failure after 40 hours.

He found that the cam bearing was so soft that it wore out, sending metal everywhere that oil circulated.

I think we've seen similar reports earlier in this thread as well.

SEAFOAM in the fuel. A few ounces of ATF, (Dexron) in the fuel works even better. Some guys have even been known to run straight ATF as fuel.

Boeing; sorry to hear about your situation, they do suck you in with all those promises & then throw in those ridiculous conditions to get out of any obligation.
As I found out long ago with these diesel engines you get what you pay for.
It use to be that a generator was a convenience because we knew that the power would be back on soon.
However today many of us know that the power can go out for extended periods of time.
In my opinion it would be throwing good money away by having a Yanmar dealer attempt to fix it.
I started this Forum when I experienced the exact same scenario you did.
That very little metal you saw was the beginning of the end.
