Hey dotcom I got some better pics of the shaft and how it separates I'll put in shortly. As for your PTO shaft is there any grinding when engaging or disengaging? One thing I noticed is I've been having a bit of grinding when going in. I'm going to study this pretty closely before reassembly. You might have a theory there. The rust I'm trying to clean up as best I can.

Yeah with the clutch fully depressed the gears are grinding on ine when I shift the ratio from 540RPM to 1000RPM. If I push the lever hard enough I can stop the gears from rolling but I'm going to end up bending a shifting fork so I just start it in gear. I checked the PTO clutch and the clearances of the fingers just before the winter and even tightened them up a bit and it still drags. After seeing your shaft rusted like that I'm wondering if that isn't my problem. I need my tractor for snow removal this winter but I'm going to split it next spring/summer. I wonder how that PTO shaft slides out? :)

Sorry for the delay, should be gettin my parts tomorrow; yeh! anyways, Dotcom, ive had the hydraulic assembly off to expose the tranny and if I remember correctly the 540/1000 lever moves a coupling back and forth to switch gears. I probably will do that again seeing as im this far and all fluids are getting changed. As for progress i'll post some more pics. Of course the bottom bolts that hold the bell housing to the engine were maybe 5lbs if that. All of them no more than say 10-15lbs. Thats pretty sad! This is why we have the forums!! A grinder with a wire wheel is good to get that old gasket material off.

More to follow..

Hey good luck with everything and thanks for the documentation with lots of pics. Was that a little slip with your choice of fingers displaying the oil in pic 6 or were you making a statement :D

Had to think about that for a second, than the light bulb went on. Didn't even notice the salute but hey I guess its appropriate for the situation lol. Still waiting for my gasket not at the post office yet. Am I guess. Whew can't wait. Meantime I took the rad off and did the inevitable blow the chaff out and flushed it once again. Got me a 12 volt rad fan that I might rig up here with some sort of easy removal protection screen. I hate stopping just to remove chaff. Picked up some more fluids today as well. Its gonna be a mechanically sound tractor once again, I hope!

Succor,
When I split my tractor last fall, I had already planed to retort the bell-housing bolts.
When I put my impact gun on the first bolt, it come out like not torqued at all. So I did pass the tap and clean each hole with brake cleaner then put red Locktite on each bolts.

lol yeah I'd be pissed too. I hope they torqued the engine main bearing caps properly LOL. I should have separated my tractor last summer while I had the cab off. I was right there.

Hey Dotcom, can you expand on those bearing caps?
Ah nothing just a bad joke.... I was saying with so many bolts that you found improperly torqued, it very much makes you wonder if the rest of the engine bolts are properly torqued. It would be sad that the engine main bearing cap bolts were slack and they worked themselves loose LOL But let's not go there, I don't want to jinx you LOL
