Foton 404 questions.. PTO and clutch

/ Foton 404 questions.. PTO and clutch #11
Hello, I am new to this site. I have my Nortrac NT254 tractor split now and am presently in the process of changing out the clutch. It is dual stage. There is an adjustment inside the transmission bell housing area that adjusts the free play from the top of the pressure plate release arms to the throw out bearing. I have been reading in other forums it should be somewhere around 2.5mm of air space. Since I am replacing my clutch I had to take measurements elsewhere for disassembly. I am waiting on parts to come and hopefully will be putting my tractor back together this weekend. Unfortunately you will have to disassemble your FEL to get to the tractor side inspection plates. They are just under the bolt on areas of the FEL to the tractor bellhousing area. Hope this info helps:)

Thanks for the info.. I haven't gotten that far yet although I believe I will be splitting it next year just to be on the safe side for the clutch. Since this is a wet clutch are the plates higher than the fluid level or are they below fluid level requiring draining?

Thanks again for the reply

Thanks Tommy.. I wasn't sure.. I have read several posts that conflict with each other so I went with the more popular belief that it was wet. Figured I would find it out when I got there.. Besides.. When I get it apart would of for sure found out.. Besides I need to get the parts from you when I get to that point :)

Ok seems to need adjustment every 2 weeks to keep it in check.. I am using the **** out of it currently so a couple of rounds every two weeks to keep the end pedal play in check.. I will run it like this until it starts to make noise or gets hard to shift. Then its off to the races to get parts and swap it out

Hey there fellow TBN Chinese tractor owners,

It's been a long time since I posted.. I have been wearing this thing out learning how to use it and what best to use it for and hey may have even come up with some crazy ways to use it.. BTW they excel at putting out field fires  Since my last post I finally acquired some land to use my tractor on which is a good thing it sure was tearing up the backyard playing with it. :D

I have put near 100 hours on it since buying the land and had a few questions.. Some of which I may have not paid attention to prior to being more familiar with the machine but wanted to ask the crowd what they thought.

First PTO.
All is still working as it should but I think this symptom is new. When I first bought it with 600 hours on it I swore the PTO was quiet and rarely if ever moved when it was not in gear. If it did move it was pretty easy to stop with your shoe.. I think! Now although it is still working fabulously for my bushhog I think something may be different. First I have punished this little bush hog and subsequently the PTO while cleaning up this property. It has found tire after tire buried in 8ft weeds, grass, and trees. An uncountable number of large rocks, and bricks. and the occasional what the heck was that shooting out of there item. But it is why I bought a cheap used one because I had no idea what was out there or under all that tall stuff. Apparently this guy used the property as a dump site..

I digress BACK TO THE PTO.. the PTO now seems to "whir" even when not in gear. When I reach down to stop it, it seems to stop easy enough but it keeps on whirring moving or not and feels much like a ratchet being turned the wrong way.. with only slight resistance. Is there a one way in there? I thought this was straight gears and no funny stuff in between.

Next Clutch.
Have the manual but wanted an education. Again this is where I am not sure that I ever noticed and only now notice due to more time on the tractor or has gotten this way with use.
No problem shifting gears except occasionally (usually that's when I have forgotten the throttle lock engaged). But, it seems to release at the top of the pedal, and it has absolutely no linkage slack. That is where I need the education I believe I am reading my manual right and it should have a little slack in it.. Or is that to engagement looking through the inspection hole? Currently have proven I cant slip it, it will churn all 4 tires if I butt up against a big tree and hasn't failed to climb the hills on the property and noengage it into neutral. high revs at anytime.

As always guys thanks for any help
Rick
Did you ever figure out what was happening to your PTO, having same problem on my 404, also have same bushhog. Wondering if I am damaging my transmission by using PTO when it is whirring, although seems like it whirrs most when I try to put in in neutral.
The PTO is stuck in 540 rpm cycle and wont shift into neutral, whirrs the most when I try to put it into neutral. I'm thinking a bearing is going out in PTO shaft, but mowing great, only have a 1/2 acre left, but hesitant to mow until I know if I am damaging my whole transmission . Clutch is new, had all oil changed, filters ect. PTO is as old as tractor though, it a 2005, never been replaced.
Realize this is an old post of yours, but all I could find on a Foton 404, and of course its Saturday and my tractor dealer in Bellville, Texas is closed, wont be available until Monday and was really hoping to finish my horse pasture before the next round of rain.
But thinking its not worth destroying my entire tractor. :)
Thank you!!
