Foton 404 - Starter makes winding sound

   / Foton 404 - Starter makes winding sound #21
  • The FT404s I've worked on didn't employ compression release because of the direct injection engine.
  • Silicon dielectric grease is made specifically to keep electrical connections clean and dry. Use no substitutes.
  • Voltage is initially a nominal 12v because there's no load. The important voltage to read is when the starter motor is actually turning. 11-12 volts; good. 9-10 volts; hit and miss. 7-8 volts; clicking.
  • But the fact that you got no change by shorting it at the solenoid directly contradicts the verdict of the technician that declared your starter healthy. It might simply have been your technique, you might want to try short-starting at the solenoid again.

Short starting the solenoid is what I was doing in the video, correct?

So you're telling me the solenoid is bad. How much is a starter & solenoid both?

Tommy,

My issue with you is, you are trying to sell me a part without even knowing if it will solve my problem. I'm in sales and would not dare attempt the tactic you just employed. It is these kinds of sales methodologies that give us a bad name. If you're on here to help, and possibly solve some problems, that is great but if you just wanna sell me anything you can without helping me then I will find another supplier. Please don't be a slime ball.

Thanks

I can't see exactly what you are doing, but to me, when you short the battery connection to the small connection meant to energize the solenoid, you are "short starting."

I offer alot of free advise on this board and others, you had your starter checked and said it was good right ? Guess what it's not.My best guess is it's a bad soleniod, you have said your not mechanical. That being said ,I would say your better off buying the complete deal starter and solenoid ., your asking everyone on here if it will solve your problem. No one can answer that question without seeing your tractor to confirm , but being this is my business I have a very good feel for what it is.I would not spend $ 1.00 with a slime ball like me,good luck in your search for answers

I said do not be a slime ball. I didn't call you a slime ball! It is kinda odd, that everyone else offered solutions and you offered products. Your posts speak for themselves. Look back through the posts and compare your information to what everyone else had to say.

I would like to thank everyone else for their concerted efforts in attempting to solve my tractor problems. It is greatly appreciated!

Well, yes and no. That's why I advised you to try it again. Your attempt was barely 4 seconds long, during which you removed the screwdriver twice. Shorting with the screw driver causes the solenoid to shoot the starter pinion gear into the flywheel ring gear. But as soon as you remove the screwdriver, return spring tension necessarily causes the pinion to retract. Inertia causes the starter motor to spin down, which is the "winding" sound you hear. This happens all the time when you let go of the keyswitch. You just don't hear the "winding" over the sound of the now-running diesel.

Once you've shorted the posts, you have to keep the screwdriver in place for a period of time that is at least equal to how long it used to take the keyswitch to start the engine. Don't worry about a few sparks, just keep the pinion engaged and the motor turning.
