- The FT404s I've worked on didn't employ compression release because of the direct injection engine.
- Silicon dielectric grease is made specifically to keep electrical connections clean and dry. Use no substitutes.
- Voltage is initially a nominal 12v because there's no load. The important voltage to read is when the starter motor is actually turning. 11-12 volts; good. 9-10 volts; hit and miss. 7-8 volts; clicking.
- But the fact that you got no change by shorting it at the solenoid directly contradicts the verdict of the technician that declared your starter healthy. It might simply have been your technique, you might want to try short-starting at the solenoid again.
