I have enjoyed this story, but have to say coyotes in this area are a HUGE problem. They are very aggressive, so if you want to label me as a hater without knowing my true opinion fine, but I'd like the chance to clearify. I believe they have a place, but when they get out of control and cause issue's that place needs to be adjusted. 10+ yrs ago it was nothing for us to have 30+ deer in our back yard now we're lucky if we see 4-5. We have to watch our pets, livestock and ourselves especially in the cover of darkness. We've even had them laying in wait underneith our crawl space (over 10 of them) trying to get our dogs. You have an individual story that is interesting, but for me to show sympathy towards this creature will not happen at this time until they are brought back into check. They should have a place in the wild but so shouldn't the wolf bear etc...... Humans have allready destroyed the wolf in this area which inturn caused a new breed of coyote to emerge. They are aggressive and larger then their southern cousin, they are also losing their natural fear. Do I hate them, not really, just know they have become a big pain/pest, which in away was caused by humans.

The way I see it is that with the way society has grown they are not taking the place of the predators that displaced. By that I mean we diplaced the normal predators and used to hunt enough to keep the natural order, but as time passed fewer and fewer people hunt, so more of the game is building in population and closer to our nieghborhoods, which in turn brings the predators close to our homes. Now due to the lake of hunting escpecially in urban areas the predators have stayed and are preying on pets and anything else they can overpower. They have no fear of man because in the urban setting they are not being shot at or pushed as they previously would have been.

I hope that everyone had a good Thanksgiving and spent time with loved ones. John it is good to see Sandy enjoying herself again, and occasionally we get to see a glimpse of her in their daily posts. They seem to try and do alot to entertain them and keep them in good health.

If coyotes are that big of a problem for me I would be shooting them every chance I got. I can't ever see my self trapping or poisoning them. Although if they harmed or killed a pet or a family member I can't say where I would be with using those tactics. Coyotes have been seen taking small children in California, so you have to assume it's a possibility anywhere.
When they get to a point where clearly there are too many they should be eradicated or otherwise kept away from your property. No difference between coyotes and rats or cockroaches at that point. You have every right to get your lifestyle/freedom back.
I am assuming they are not protected, if the law protects them, (which I've never heard of such a law) then you have to explore other options.
You are not alone with that opinion. There are lots of people on TBN that dislike coyotes.

I live out in the country and we see many more coyotes than we used to. My problems is that they have killed several of my geese, coming right up to the barn during the day. I know that poultry are a coyote magnet and I have killed several coyotes over the years. I'd rather leave them alone but you do what's necessary.

A big problem is that the coyotes are coming into the towns and killing small dogs and cats.

Jesse1 that was a concern of ours when we ended up with chickens( daughter thought that made a good Mothers Day present), but I found that with us having two wolves that keeps the coyotes off our property. They still roam around, but won't cross into the wolves territory. Our two have the run of the property. The male he is the youngest has an underground fence set up, only because he loves to run and didn't know where to stop, his opion was his territory was as far as he could see and he can run fast! We have never had a problem out of them they deal with the cats fine, and when the chics were outside during the day would lay beside the pen to protect them. But they definitely keep the coyotes clear.

I think that if given the choice between coyotes as neighboors and people as neighboors, I'd choose the coyotes.

Worst case scenario you can shoot the coyotes if they are too intrusive.

We would make good neighbors.

LOL. Very good point. I like to have them around as well. I once had 7 of them chasing the dog around the house or the dog chasing them, I am not sure. Mostly they keep the mice down.

Good morning everyone!

Happy Holidays to you all.

I just got another note and picture from Southwest about Sandy and thought I'd share them with you. They are taking excellent care of her. She's doing as well as can be expected and just as smart as ever. Beautiful too!

"Hi John and Liye! So sorry that you miss her. She's a unique little lady.

She's doing well. I believe she's adjusting to being in an enclosure, finally. She's figured out that if she jumps up on one of her houses she can see who's coming down the walkway in the nature center and this seems to have calmed her down. She didn't like not knowing what was coming her way and I can understand that.

We had a setback on the clicker training when she was frightened by some loud, careless people who happened by during one of our training sessions. It took a couple of months before she would consider focusing on it again and she blamed me and the hotdogs! So, we're learning. This last month she's forgiven me gradually and I get soft, sweet eyes again, and a tail wag.

She's been digging a den, but it's not going according to plan. Turns out that this enclosure doesn't have wire beneath it, but has deep footers around the outside, so she can work on a den on her own. She decided to dig beneath one of the houses and has managed, so far, only to make it teeter back and forth. So I square it up a bit and she digs and one of these days, she'll have a den.

Her enclosure is so full of toys that it's hard to clean and now Iv'e added a gigantic section of pine tree from a ponderosa pine which fell at our place up north. She's enjoying tearing the bark off of it. I had to recruit several large guys to get it in there it weighs a ton.

Oh, and you'll enjoy this. We feed frozen rabbits to our mountain lions at least once a week, but they're kind of expensive. Occasionally the rabbits are cut into smaller pieces and Iv'e been given permission to use some for Sandy. That may have been when she forgave me entirely for the previous unfortunate incident. She could hardly believe it the first time she got one. She looked at me and licked the rabbit and looked at me and finally wagged her tail off and took it behind her house. Before I left that day, she ran over and gave me a huge smile, before racing back to her rabbit piece. I may have to shop for rabbit meat for her just to see that smile.

Hope you all have a lovely holiday. Are you getting snow? I haven't gotten too many good pictures of her, but here's one that's not too blurry."

Thanks John...I was hoping for an update :)

She looks stately and well in the picture. She is so majestic (sp?)

Are you planning on visiting some time in the future? Thanks...TMR

P.S. Let us know if they would allow for a "frozen rabbit" fund for her :) TMR

TMR,

You read my mind. I'll contact them and see about a rabbit fund.

John, great picture you have to be proud every up date. You did a good thing taking that pup in beautiful animal. If you start up a rabbit fund pass it on I would contribute.

Marry Christmas to all at TBN

With a rabbit fund, what would you do...contract with someone that raises rabbits? Thinking about it...maybe chickens, too! Have you tried Sandy with a chicken?

Redbug,

As mentioned in the letter from Southwest that I posted, they order rabbits for the lions regularly, but don't normally give any to Sandy. She loves rabbits above all other food. Around here, we had a routine we went through with rabbits that she thoroughly enjoyed. It wasn't just the food, but the possession, the hiding it and the activity of separating it into various parts, etc. There were natural behaviors that she only displayed with rabbits. She waited for them and wouldn't eat anything else until really hungry. They seem to help her cope with her new surroundings and confinement. When they gave her some the other day at Southwest, it had a big affect on her.

I've been contributing to the general fund at Southwest and am looking for ways to help Sandy specifically. A small amount sent to her as a rabbit fund seems like a good idea. They already have a place to get them and do regularly. They have been looking for ways to help her settle in and this would help.

For me, this is an ongoing story that has a lot of chapters yet to be discovered. My pal is fenced in and we can't hang out together. Maybe I can make sure she gets a care package once in a while and is a little happier.
